Analysis: The problem for Joe Biden at the Democratic debate, Day 2, wasn’t that he was so bad. It was that Kamala Harris was so good.

Russian president says the Salisbury poisonings are not worth ‘all this fuss’ and that liberals can no longer ‘dictate’ to anyone‘The average person listens and says “who are these Skripals?”’ Vladimir Putin said in an interview with the Financial Times. Photograph: SPUTNIK/ReutersVladimir Putin has said ahead of his meeting with Theresa May at the G20 summit in Japan that relations between Britain and Russia should not suffer because of last year’s nerve agent attack on the former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia. The Russian president also used the interview with the Financial Times to claim that the election of Donald Trump as US president and the rise of nationalist-populist movements in Europe signaled the death of liberal policies in the west.“[Liberals] cannot simply dictate anything to anyone just like they have been attempting to do over the recent decades,” he said. “The liberal idea has become obsolete. It has come into conflict with the interests of the overwhelming majority of the population.”The claims brought a short response from European council president Donald Tusk at the G20 summit in Osaka on Friday.“I strongly disagree with the main argument that liberalism is obsolete. Whoever claims that liberal democracy is obsolete, also claims that freedoms are obsolete, that the rule of law is obsolete and that human rights are obsolete,” he said. “For us in Europe, these are and will remain essential and vibrant values. What I find really obsolete are: authoritarianism, personality cults, the rule of oligarchs. Even if sometimes they may seem effective.”On the Skripals, Putin told the FT in an interview at the Kremlin that: “All this fuss about spies and counterspies is not worth interstate relations. This spy story, as we say here, is not worth 5 kopecks.“I think Russia and UK are both interested in fully restoring our relations – at least I hope a few preliminary steps will be taken.”Bilateral ties between Britain and Russia plummeted to a post-Cold War low last year when London accused Moscow of the poisoning of the Skripals in Salisbury. The Kremlin denies sending GRU military intelligence agents to Britain to carry out the attack, which triggered scores of diplomatic expulsions between Moscow and western countries.“The average person listens and says ‘who are these Skripals?’” Putin said. “Treason is the gravest crime possible and traitors must be punished. I am not saying that the Salisbury incident is the way to do it … but traitors must be punished.” Putin has previously called Skripal a “scumbag.”The G20 summit takes place in Osaka on Friday and Saturday. May’s spokesman has said she will use the meeting with Putin to ensure that Britain’s stance on “Russia’s wider pattern of malign behaviour” has been fully grasped by the Kremlin.Putin described German chancellor Angela Merkel’s decision to allow more than a million refugees – most of whom were fleeing the war in Syria – into Germany as a “cardinal mistake”.In contrast, he was full of praise for Trump’s attempts to prevent migrants from entering the US from Mexico. “This liberal idea presupposes that nothing needs to be done. That migrants can kill, plunder and rape with impunity because their rights as migrants have to be protected.”Putin also tried to defend Russia’s record on LGBT+ rights. “I am not trying to insult anyone because we have been condemned for our alleged homophobia. But we have no problem with LGBT persons. God forbid, let them live as they wish,” Putin said. “But some things do appear excessive to us. They claim now that children can play five or six gender roles.”Moscow has been criticised internationally for its so-called anti-gay propaganda law, which bars the promotion of “non-traditional sexual relations” to children. Human rights groups say the law, which Putin approved in 2013, has sparked a spike in homophobic violence. A UN panel ruled last year that the law was in violation of a legally binding international treaty on human rights.

An Iraqi general and a U.S. Marine testifying in the murder trial of a U.S. Navy SEAL said on Thursday they never saw the platoon leader stab a wounded detainee in the neck, disputing the central allegation in the prosecution’s war crimes case. A sworn deposition of Major General Abbas al-Jubouri, videotaped in San Diego earlier this month, was played for the seven-member jury on the second day of defense testimony in the court-martial of Navy Special Operations Chief Edward Gallagher. Contrary to prior testimony that Gallagher, or a medic on his team, had acted deliberately to cause the death of a helpless Islamic State fighter in their custody, Jubouri said the Navy SEALs did all they could to save the teenager’s life.

Pope Francis says he is “profoundly saddened” by the deaths of Óscar Alberto Martínez Ramírez and his 23-month-old daughter, Angie Valeria, who drowned in the Rio Grande River while trying to reach America.“With immense sadness, the Holy Father has seen the images of the father and his baby daughter who drowned in the Rio Grande River while trying to cross the border between Mexico and the United States,” the Vatican’s interim spokesman, Alessandro Gisotti, said in a statement on Wednesday.“The pope is profoundly saddened by their death, and is praying for them and for all migrants who have lost their lives while seeking to flee war and misery,” he added. The photograph of the bodies of the 25-year-old father and his young daughter face down in the Rio Grande has been published around the world, inciting horror and shame over America’s current immigration policy. The pair, along with Tania Vanessa Ávalos, wife of Mr Ramírez and mother to Valeria, were attempting to cross the river at the border crossing between Matamoros, Mexico, and Brownsville, Texas. They’d fled poverty in El Salvator with a humanitarian visa in Mexico two months earlier, and had been awaiting asylum in the US.The pope’s official statement came after off-the-cuff comments during his weekly audience in St Peter’s Square, during which the pontiff complimented the people of Mexico for being “so welcoming to migrants. God bless you.” A group of Mexicans attending reportedly cheered and waved a Mexican flag in response. It’s not the first time Pope Francis has shown his support for Mexico’s immigration policy, or his criticism for America’s. In 2016, Pope Francis criticised then-presidential candidate Donald Trump, suggesting that anyone who wanted to build a wall along the border was “not a Christian.”(Outside of Catholicism, the president’s immigration policy was warmly received at an evangelical Christian conference in DC yesterday.)On Twitter, the pope appeared to offer a third statement on Thursday morning, writing from his official account, “Blessed are those who believe and who have the courage to foster encounter and communion.”

A witness who dropped stunning testimony at the war crimes trial of a decorated Navy SEAL by telling the court he had killed an Islamic State captive in Iraq in 2017 — not his accused platoon chief — could now face charges of perjury, according to the Navy. The Navy’s legal adviser to the commander overseeing the court-martial of Special Operations Chief Edward Gallagher notified the witness’s lawyer, Brian Ferguson, in an email late Tuesday that the testimony Corey Scott gave last week could be used against him if he lied on the stand or gave a false statement. Cmdr. Tam Lawrence, Naval Special Warfare spokesperson, said Scott was granted immunity in exchange for the promise of truthful testimony.

Some dogs struggle, spending years of their lives waiting for a forever home. One Lab Mix named Moose traveled across states to find the perfect human to call his own. But then, it happened. Moose finally found love and his forever home. Unfortunately, forever would end too soon for this loving lab. As he sat vigil, the fate of the beautiful boy was once again in question.
Moose started his life in difficult circumstances. In 2017, someone found him tied to a railroad sign in front of an animal shelter in rural Georgia.
Moose lived in the shelter for many months. No one wanted to adopt this adorable pup and time was running out for him. Unfortunately, Moose was residing in a kill shelter. The longer he lived there, the more likely he would be euthanized because of overcrowding. It is a fate too sad to even think about.
However, one shelter employee would not give up on Moose. She asked her peers for help until she found Eleventh Hour Rescue in New Jersey. They had room for the Lab. Moose moved north to his temporary home. Soon after, his new dad came into the shelter and adopted Moose. It was love at first sight.
After only one year in his new home, tragedy struck. Moose’s dad fell ill. While sick, his dad spent time lying in a hospital bed. When he passed away, Moose could not comprehend that his beloved father had left this earth. He sat patiently next to the bed, waiting for his dad to return. Simply heartbreaking.
Thankfully, the folks at Eleventh Hour Rescue did not forget about Moose. They brought him back to their shelter because they stay true to their motto: “Once an Eleventh Hour dog, always an Eleventh Hour dog.”
The employees at Eleventh Hour Rescue ached for Moose. They wanted to find him a forever home with a wonderful family. They posted his story on their social media channels and suddenly it started spreading. There were thousands of shares across their account and others.
Adoption applications started rolling in for the pup. Just a few days later a forever home was found! Eleventh Hour Rescue posted this on Facebook:
MOOSE HAS BEEN ADOPTED by a wonderful family who will care for and love him for the rest of his life!
Hooray for Moose! Though this loyal and loving dog suffered through many trials and tribulations, we are thrilled to hear that he found a new home.

Leroy is fostered in South Shields (FR012). He is 5 years old male Spaniel Collie Cross. Leroy is the final one of 7 siblings that we have gradually taken out of radulti shelter, hes had to wait 5 long years but his time is finally here and he is adapting very well. Hes still sussing this new life out and hes trying his best to be brave, he bonded with the people in the house very quickly but he still gets a little bit shy and can take a few hours to warm to strangers at the moment. When he knows who you are he loves his cuddles and seeks out a fuss. He gets so excited when we come in jumping up and down until we come and greet him.
He was initially quite frightened of the others dogs in the house, in his defence there are 9 and some are a bit rowdy! But as soon as he realised they weren’t a threat he relaxed and he loves to chase and play with the younger dogs in the house flying round the garden and asking them to play.
He arrived with his brother Lucas who he lived with in Romania and we would love to see them in a home together but as hes coming out of his shell I do think he could live happily in a home with another dog or as an only dog. Our adoption fee is £250. They are vaccinated, microchipped and neutered (unless they are too young). If you are interested please message or call between 9am and 6pm
Ruby is a 9 month old female Shih Tzu cross Cavalier. Ruby came into our care due to her owner’s ill health. She did come to us with another dog (Annie), however we are looking for separate homes for these girls but where there is already another resident dog as they have both came from a multi-dog household. Ruby is a typical lively puppy who is full of fun and mischief. Ruby will benefit from a quiet home where any children are over the age of 10 and due to her young age she will need someone around all of the day.
Any resident dogs must be of a compatible age and size and able to tolerate a needy, demanding puppy wanting to play. She has never been around cats. Ruby is not used to being walked and may have accidents in the home so will need patience with both of these issues. She will also require regular grooming. Please take into careful consideration your future circumstances before applying to adopt Ruby as she is only young and will require a lifetime commitment for the next 10+ years.
Annie is a 2 year old female Shih Tzu Cross. Annie came into our care due to her owner’s ill health. She did come to us with another dog (Ruby), however we are looking for separate homes for these girls but where there is already another resident dog as they have both came from a multi-dog household. Annie is a nervous girl to begin with and does take time to trust new people and will bark at first, however she is very sweet natured and affectionate once she knows you. Annie will benefit from a quiet home free from young children and with someone around for most of the day.
Initially she can be nervous around new dogs and will bark but is fine once she gets to know them. She has never been around cats. Annie is not used to being walked and may have accidents in the home so will need patience with both of these issues. She will also require regular grooming. Please take into careful consideration your future circumstances before applying to adopt Annie as she is only young and will require a lifetime commitment for the next 10+ years.
Tobi and Mitzi are 2 year old male and female Shih Tzu cross Bichon Frise. Tobi (smaller, curly coat) and Mitzi are an adorable duo sadly looking for a new home due to their owner’s ill health. They have been much loved pets all of their life and this has been a very hard decision for their owner to make. They are not related but are a very bonded pair so we are looking for a home where they can stay together.
Tobi and Mitzi are friendly, sweet natured dogs who also mix well with other dogs. Mitzi is excitable when she first meets you and may jump up but does settle quickly. She loves to play with tennis balls and has excellent recall for a treat. Tobi can initially be nervous and responds best when he can come to you in his own time. He is easily spooked and may back off if you try to pick him up, however he is friendly. Both Tobi and Mitzi are used to regular grooming and have no known behaviour or medical issues. They are housetrained, although Mitzi can have the odd accident if not in a strict routine.
Tobi and Mitzi are currently used to someone being home throughout the day and therefore we are looking for a home where they will rarely be left for more than a couple of hours. They are used to visiting children of all ages, however as they have never actually lived with any we are looking for a home where any children are over the age of 12. They could live with a compatible dog/s of a similar size and age.
Her expressive brown eyes protected by what looks like a swim mask and her feet in blue booties, Frida—a 10-year-old yellow Lab—sat obligingly for the camera. After nine years as a member of the Mexican navy’s canine and urban SAR unit, she’s retiring, but instead of a gold watch, her reward is a new chew toy.
A veteran SAR dog, Frida’s credited with finding more than 50 people, 12 of them alive, during her career. In 2017, as she searched for survivors in the rubble of a Mexico City school that collapsed in a 7.1 magnitude earthquake, a tweet from the Mexican navy put her on the map—or rather, on the Twitterverse. While she wasn’t the only SAR dog on the job, she became the face of the rescue effort.
Dog's name and age: Maximo, 1 year
Adoption Story: We met Max at an adoption event by Lucky Dog Animal Rescue who had dogs from Puerto Rico. We instantly fell in love. His birthday is the same day at my daughter's finance, who is coincidentally also from Puerto Rico so we knew it was meant to be. We had lost our beloved poodle of 15 years and did not think we wanted another dog, but Max change it all. Max came into our lives when we were grieving the loss of our sweet Riley, stole our hearts, and has brought us so much joy.
Photo Story: I do photo shoots with Max each week, and this one was for Taco Tuesday!
Psychologists who study how people pick their spouses have turned their attention to another important relationship: choosing a canine companion.
They recently found that, when it comes to puppy love, the heart doesn’t always know what it wants.
The researchers based their results, which could help improve the pet adoption process, on data from a working animal shelter.
“What we show in this study is that what people say they want in a dog isn’t always in line with what they choose,” says Samantha Cohen, who led the study as a PhD student in the psychological and brain sciences department at Indiana University-Bloomington. “By focusing on a subset of desired traits, rather than everything a visitor says, I believe we can make animal adoption more efficient and successful.”
