A Cat-Finding Detection Dog
Detection dog helps reunite wildfire evacuees with their cats.
Shortly after the Holiday Farm fire decimated the Oregon towns of Blue River and Vida in early September this year, Katie Albright headed to the burn zone with an animal trapper and two firefighters. “A big house on the river was still standing, with a cat inside,” she says. “The power was out, it was dark and we had a six pm curfew. The house was huge, and we couldn’t find the cat. Finally, I told the team, ‘Let me bring in Franklin.’”
Franklin is Albright’s three-year old Dachshund/Beagle mix, adopted from a Colorado shelter. With him, she completed a 10-week remote cat-detection course through Missing Animal Response Network, which trains dogs to detect the scent of lost felines.

Dunkin is a rescue dog who is described by his person as the ultimate sports dog. He's got a spunky personality and a ton of confidence, except apparently when it comes to vacuums.
Dunkin is exceedingly well versed in trick training, so he's capable of jumping any doggy gate in the house, no matter how high. Dunkin’s skills have been tested; he can clear them all. There is only thing Dunkin won't jump over, his kryptonite—the dreaded vacuum!

Convincing my partner to adopt a dog took years.
Once the seed for a dog has been planted, it grows until the desire is unbearable. I found myself wandering through Central Park pointing out every single—and I mean every single—person with a dog, asking, “Why does she get a dog and I don’t?” This started as a joke, but after our wedding, it turned into a serious question. The question became harder and harder for him to answer.

Man’s Best (Secret) Friend
Every dog has their person. A dog may find comfort with everyone in a household, but there is always one special person they’ll gravitate toward. When my family welcomed Artie, our precious Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy, eight years ago, we had hoped that his special person would be my little brother. But this was not the case. Instead, Artie decided to cling to my father, and over time, his grip has only tightened, much to my father’s dismay.
My dad is basically the human incarnation of Donkey Kong. He’s kind of a supervillain—not that he’s an awful person, but he’s got this aura around him that screams “don’t mess with me.” By day, he’s a judge, and by night, he goes to his jiu jitsu class and fights other men. He’s a macho guy. He’s Vegeta from Dragon Ball. He can be intimidating if you don’t know him (sometimes, he’s even intimidating if you do know him).

Dog Helps to Monitor Air Pollution
A boy and his dog are out to show that air pollution can be a lot worse closer to the ground—specifically, right around the height of a toddler or a stroller (and of many dogs). Surprisingly, that’s not the zone where air pollution is monitored in the UK, which has some of the highest asthma rates in Europe. There, the monitors, mounted on lampposts or signs, are nearly five feet off the ground.
