Nala – 9 month old female Cross-Breed

Nala is a 9 month old female Cross-Breed. She is looking for a quiet, adult home (older teens may be considered) with another good-natured dog. No cats. Nala has only met one man who came to the house socially due to lockdown. She was very nervous but after giving her treats and a distraction she settled but it took a few visits before Nala was more excited than nervous (barking and hiding but not aggressive) when he came.

She is very friendly and always has been towards my son and has never shown any nervousness. When she meets men outside she is sometimes hesitant which means she holds back but if they are speaking with me then she will usually relax quite quickly. If there is a treat then that would definitely increase her feeling comfortable.

Nala has met a lot more women than men or children and I would say her reaction is similar. Inside the house she is wary and will bark, non aggressive warning until she is introduced. Then when she has made friends she is really friendly. Outside of the house she is very friendly to women I know but if it is a stranger she will hold back. She has had two older children (8 & 12) visit and she is very friendly and not nervous. They first visited her with their dog and I think that made Nala feel much more at ease.

I haven’t had a lot of general visitors but the occasion I have had someone in and out for a building work she was very nervous. She was distracted by a treat but she was not happy with them walking around because I was unable to introduce her (slowly) in the way I would with a friend. She loves other dogs and is nearly always happy to meet them. She has a few chums who she meets to play with and she couldn’t be happier then. Nala is not cat friendly. She doesn’t react a great deal when she sees ducks, squirrels, birds etc. she is happy to watch for a while and move on.

Nala is quite sound sensitive to noises. Noises such as building works especially (bangs etc) outside and general noises outside my house. I have had to introduce things such as the hoover, hairdryer slowly and let her get used to the noise. She is happy in her collar and sometimes wears a harness. She reacted to animals on the TV (especially dogs) but I have been working on desensitising and she is improving enormously. She can now sit and watch most animals without getting upset.

When Nala arrived she was not able to walk down my road as she was too nervous. She has come such a long way walking as she has got used to traffic and people on the pavement. However, she is still nervous which means she can be walking and she may hear a sound (this is mostly what happens) or see something and she will freeze. I will give her treats and wait for her to feel comfortable enough to start walking again. When she is walking with another dog she is so much more confident and will walk without being nervous. Also if I am walking with someone else she is far more comfortable.

Nala will bark in the house when she is triggered by something and that is usually a noise but will calm quickly through redirection. I live on quite a narrow busy road and the noises outside can disturb her. She will also bark with a visitor arriving. She doesn’t bark when we are going for walks.

Nala will sit and wait nicely for her food and is comfortable when food is removed. She is moving through the puppy stages as you would expect, needing to continue boundaries around leaving things, jumping up etc. I would say she would really benefit from being in a quiet area without quite so much stimulus as I have in my home and surroundings. I also think she would love to be with another dog as that is when she is so happy.

Nala is a very sweet natured and loves cuddles on the sofa in the evening. She is super friendly to who she has bonded with. She does a dance on her hind legs that is adorable and many other little things like rolling onto her back when you say ‘bedtime’ ready to be carried to her bed to go to sleep. In foster in Middlesex.

Please note that due to Covid restrictions we rehome our dogs as locally as possible.
