Bailey is a 1 year old male Cockapoo. He seems to be following the typical trend of this beautiful cross breeding; he has been surrendered into rescue due to resource guarding behaviour and biting. He is a complex little lad who doesn’t fully understand why he’s doing what he does, but the behaviour has subsequently become ingrained after many years of repeatedly being enabled. Bailey thrives on structure and routine; he does not do well with constant aspects of his day to day life changing, being exposed to excessively busy environments or multiple unknown people being introduced to him without sufficient caution being in place. His family tried for a long time to manage his behaviour but understandably found it very hard and asked us to take him under our care. He originally started guarding his bed from his owners and their fear of him exacerbated his behaviour where it escalated to him guarding the whole house from them and actually holding them hostage in their own home. Bailey is a resource guarder and has nipped on a few occasions.
For those who don’t know Resource guarding refers to a dog displaying behavior (growling, snapping, etc.) intended to convince other dogs or humans to stay away from a particular treasure or “resource.” The resource can be food, treats, toys, a place (a bed or favorite chair), or occasionally a person. In Bailey’s case his bed and his person were both guarded. He does also guard things that you drop on the floor IF he’s allowed to get it. However if you correct him with “leave it” before he gets the item he will leave it alone without problem. He has not bitten over his bed but does lower his body and growl. He has nipped a few people coming close to his human but this can be redirected with careful monitoring of his body language and removing him from the situation. He is learning slowly that guarding his person has the opposite affect of what he is trying to achieve. This training will need to be continued if Bailey is to succeed in his new home. Since being under the care of Pupcakes, Bailey has been extremely friendly and social with dogs and people alike but he may change on entering a home environment that he comes to recognise as his home.
Bailey gets on well with all of the dogs in residence here but does guard his bed against them. He would be like to share his home with another playful companion of similar energy level but alternatively could live happily as a solo dog. If he were to live with another dog he would need a home that is able to deal with him guarding his bed from them and deterring him from doing so.
Bailey is quite unruly and although knows sit and paw he doesn’t have any basic manners, especially outside of the home environment where he jumps up at people and pulls on the lead towards people and other dogs; he whines to get to other dogs and pulls heavily on the lead. He also barges through doors. He generally checks in quite regularly offlead and has a fantastic recall when in controlled environments with no other distractions. Bailey is smart and trainable and would greatly benefit from attending training classes with his new human to help him become a calm, balanced dog and also to help cement a good relationship between him and his person. Bailey is house broken and non destructive in the home.
Bailey needs a home that is experienced with resource guarding and happy to continue with the training the rescue has put in place here. Due to his fearfulness of being touched suddenly and the fact he has a bite history we cannot accept applications from homes with resident children under 13. He is a sweet boy who loves his people and having a belly rub, we are certain in the correct home he will really flourish. Bailey will benefit from a home that is active; he loves to walk and when he’s regularly exercised his resource guarding behaviour improves dramatically. A tired dog is a happy dog we always say. He also would be a fantastic candidate for something like Cani cross or agility.
