Jack – 3 year old male Cross-Breed

Jack is a 3 year old male Cross-Breed. Jack is looking for his forever home, preferably with no cats (unless intensive training is given to stop him chasing them) and older children – he is neutered, microchipped, flead, wormed, vaccinated & has his own passport. Jack has a few issues that will need some work below is his bio by his current family: Jack is a dog in need of lots of love and in the home is generally well behaved and good. He has been described as a mature dog. He’s not fussy, greedy, attention seeking or whiney. He eats and drinks well and doesn’t beg at the table. He knows what he is supposed to do in the home. (Ie: he isn’t allowed upstairs and doesn’t attempt to go) and he doesn’t chew or wreck any furniture or clothes etc. He has learned not to run out of the house until he is told to (he waits at the top of the stairs) and he doesn’t come up the stairs (we are on the first floor) until he is told to.

However, he is a different dog out side and quite unpredictable. We live in an area with a large community of Hasidic Jewish families, and they do not like dogs. Jack doesn’t not like the men in this community, and they are afraid of him. They wear long black coats and it is possibly this that aggravates him. He is very strong and barks aggressively at them, and at times has bitten their coats. We have a worked hard to stop this, and he is so much better but not completely trustworthy not to do it again. He doesn’t like women runners and has nipped two of them in the past few months (nothing terrible but shocking to the joggers and to us). He also doesn’t like small girls on scooters, and generally anyone who has their head covered (men in caps, women in veils…..).

When I say he doesn’t like them, he barks continually at them in a protective manner. He nipped the end of a woman’s long cardigan (she was just walking by) while we were on a walk. We have tried a muzzle, which we still do use, but he hates it and it was very hard in the summer when he couldn’t quite pant properly in the heat. He doesn’t (and I know this isn’t completely unusual) like other dogs when they are on a lead and he is on a lead; he is so strong and barks very loudly.

However, he loves the company of other dogs when he is off the lead, and this is when he is most happy, though we still feel worried that he will chase a jogger or a young child. For the past few months we have generally kept him on the lead, for fear of him harming someone. This may be our own anxiety, but we do find it stressful. He doesn’t like cats very much – he chases any he sees out of the house; he tolerates the two that we have at home, but every now and then chases them around the house.

We do not want to rehome Jack because we don’t like him (though his unpredictable aggressive nature is stressful) but because we do not feel that we can cope with him anymore due to our own difficult situation.
