Buster – 9 month old male Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross Shar Pei

Buster is a 9 month old male Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross Shar Pei. Beautiful Buster is looking for a new home after the owners ex partner asked us for help, they only had him six weeks (so we know he’s already had at least 2 homes already), he was imprisoned and she a single mother was left to pick up the pieces, she just couldn’t afford or manage everything. It’s clear to us Buster has not had a positive upbringing, consistency and socialisation. So it’s imperative we find him the right FOREVER home! Buster is doing well with familiar handlers but can still become very worried and unsure when he sees people he doesn’t know or when in unfamiliar situations. He is generally a very anxious dog but is friendly, albeit quite boisterous around those he’s comfortable with! Typical big puppy, all jumps and mouths and energy!

BUSTER IS STILL A PUPPY SO HAS LOTS OF POTENTIAL. He does want to make friends with people but will certainly need careful management and basic training to help his anxious and nervous behaviour (all likely to stem from poor socialisation). Forming positive relationships with his new owners will be very important and how they deal with Buster when meeting strangers and visitors to the home. His new owners will need to learn to read his body language to assess how comfortable he is in certain situations.

We have mixed him with other dogs on and off lead, but he is generally very boisterous with dogs and other dogs get worried by him and find him too much. He would certainly benefit from having complete one-on-one training with people in the home, without other dogs being in the mix. As he’s still only a puppy it’s likely he’s simply lost out on play and interaction with dogs so is going overboard with play and doesn’t understand other dogs avoidance language yet. If he’s to be rehomed with another dog it would have to be one who is on a par with him when it comes to play and interaction otherwise it won’t work.

We have placed him with an adult only home. It goes without saying he will need an experienced and understanding home and ideally someone who has owned an anxious dog before and delivered positive reward based training. If Buster has a good foundation to work from and managed well, we are hopeful he will settle in a new home, form great relationships and start to feel more comfortable about life.
