Everyone meet Jack. He’s going to be one of the harder dogs we have to place but don’t scroll past without giving him a thought because he’s actually (in some ways) the perfect ready made dog. (Not to mention handsome, did I tell you how handsome he is!?) Here’s some basics on this boy. He’s a year and a half old so young enough to correct the negative behavior I’m going to cover in a mo. He’s a Jack Russell Terrier (the gorgeous wire haired kind), he’s housebroken, crate trained, knows lots of commands (he’s super smart), is very affectionate and is good with other dogs. He’s currently in foster with loads and hasn’t had a cross word with any and he’s just generally a fun and interesting dog who has lots to offer. Jack has learned the unfortunate habit of getting what he wants with undesirable behavior. If he doesn’t want to do something (like go out in the garden when it’s raining) he will growl and if pushed snap at you. (Though I hasten to add that he has not actually bitten anyone yet – the behavior is all bravado and spoilt adolescent theatrics).
Unfortunately up until the point of coming into rescue this behavior has got him exactly what he wants and has been uncorrected for quite some time. His previous owners did seek the help of a useless behaviorist who quite simply put it down to his mum being stressed during pregnancy which is utter nonsense and insinuated that the behavior was incurable. It has taken all of a week to correct it in foster simply by not giving into him. If he doesn’t want to go out we get a slip lead and maneuver him into the garden with it. He now doesn’t challenge me when I ask him to go out and the slip lead is not necessary, however in a new environment he may well resort back to trying to push boundaries and slip into his old ways. We are willing to give new adopters life time help with jacks behavioral problems and ongoing advice and support with any problems that arise. Jacks other problem is strangers, he has been under socialized and underneath all those adolescent theatrics he’s actually quite an anxious little boy. Much like his previous behavior if he doesn’t want to meet new people he will act silly and offensive until they leave him alone. It took less than an hour for Jack to warm up to me and sit on my lap after a good 20 minutes of barking and air snapping.
Once he realized I wasn’t going away and wasn’t frightened of him he admitted defeat and decided he may as well try and make friends with me. Its not a behavior that’s going to be cured overnight and will require a lot of socializing with understanding committed adopters but once again we will work with people on this behavior with ongoing advice and support. Jack is a typical Terrier, he will benefit from a home that understands the breed, a lot of his problems will improve with mental stimulation and exercise. His previous owners were so worried about his behavior that they stopped walking him altogether. He has improved a lot more since ensuring he gets thoroughly exercised as Jack Russell Terriers are very energetic and need lots of stimulation. I have probably made him sound utterly terrible but in all honesty he’s the easiest dog.
We don’t even know he’s here half the time. He just needs the right home. Jack is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped and will be subject to a homecheck and adoption donation. He will also come with 4 weeks free insurance and a voucher for a box of free food.
