Actress Michelle Keegan Has A Warning After Her Dog’s Health Scare

I sincerely hope you haven’t had to experience that horrible “what did my dog just eat” moment. You know, that panic of seeing an empty wrapper or overturned plate and a guilty face. Dogs sometimes think with their noses, and they don’t exactly have the knowledge of what might be toxic to them in spite of its intoxicating scent.

English actress Michelle Keegan, known for her roles in Coronation Street and Our Girl, loves dogs. She has two: Phoebe, a Dachshund mix, and Pip, a Chihuahua. Recently, the former pup got into some accidental trouble with a pancake. Keegan took to her Instagram story to talk about Phoebe’s health scare.

“WARNING. Please don’t feed your dog raisins, grapes or any foods containing these they’re TOXIC to dogs.”

She went on to note that this knowledge is probably what saved her dog, who accidentally ate one. Keegan happened to notice the evidence.

“Luckily I knew this and when I saw an empty flapjack wrapper and my dog licking her lips I knew exactly what had happened. I immediately rang my vet and they told me to bring her in RIGHT AWAY so they could give her an injection to make her vomit.”

After a few hours, Keegan noted Phoebe was feeling “a little nauseous and a little sorry for herself”, but otherwise doing okay. Now out of hot water, she joked:

“The most expensive flapjack I have ever bought.”

Thank goodness Phoebe is okay, but it’s worth noting that vigilance and awareness likely saved her. Heed the warning: don’t feed your dogs grapes or raisins!

How To Tell If Your Dog Has Grape Poisoning

Though we don’t exactly know why, some dogs can eat grapes without experiencing any illness. For others though, the fruit (dried or not) can make them seriously ill. These toxic foods can lead to kidney damage.

Here are some signs to watch out for when it comes to grape poisoning:

  • Vomiting and/or diarrhea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Lethargy, weakness
  • Abdominal pain
  • Dehydration
  • Difficulty urinating or passing only a small amount of urine
  • Inability to pass any urine at all

In any case, if you happen to witness your dog eating grapes or raisins, take them to the vet right away. The vet will likely want to induce vomiting. If Phoebe’s story taught us anything, it’s the importance of acting quickly.
