Boston – 3 year old male Yorkshire Terrier

Gorgeous Hector is a 3 year old male Yorkshire Terrier who looks like a forever puppy. He has come into rescue due to resource guarding his human and reactivity on the lead. His mum worked incredibly hard on the challenges she has faced with Hector but unfortunately due to her circumstances was not able to continue. Hector has always been weary of dogs and particularly jealous of other dogs approaching his human and sharing his humans affection with them. This has been worked on with a trainer and improved drastically however he was attacked by a large dog at 1.5 years old and since then he has just gotten more and more reactive to dogs. He became very leash reactive and selectively reactive to certain dogs off leash (especially black dogs and Border Collies).

However, if he gets to know a dog or sometimes he just instantly loves a dog he will be so lovely and playful. He gets on incredibly well with his kennel mates and if he is with them he doesn’t react to anything on a walk as he is in a pack as such and feels safe. For this reason we are looking for a dog free home for Hector that is happy to continue to work on his leash reactivity. We are happy to offer lifetime ongoing support and guidance as well as recommend trainers in the new adopters area to continue the work already put in place by his previous owner and the rescue. Another problem is Hectors resource guarding behaviour. He is very anxious around children and projected that onto his owners housemates niece (3 years old) where she was approaching his human and he wanted to protect her; he used to and growl and lunge at her. He didn’t bite her but he gets into these fits (with dogs mostly but also with children) where he will growl and snarl and even when you pick him up or take him away he will continue to snarl.

He is generally frightened of children with their fast hands and jerky movements and loud noises. He will bark or try to avoid them on a walk. He has on another occasion almost nipped a child when a child sat down next to him on a bench suddenly. On the plus side Hector loves adults. (Strangers and friends.) He likes everyone that comes through the door or that he sees on a walk. He loves scratches and he doesn’t lick, only sniff. He is nervous at the vets and groomers but never reactive and gets good feedback every time. He likes car rides and have been on planes and ferries with no trouble. He is completely housetrained and no separation anxiety at all. He sleeps and relaxes happily even in an unfamiliar environment. He is not anxious about going to other people’s houses. He can settle anywhere. He is an excellent travel companion and he gets good feedback whenever he has been to the kennels.

Hector needs a home that is experienced with resource guarding and happy to continue with the training the rescue has put in place here. Due to his anxiety and fear of children we cannot accept applications from homes with visiting or resident children under 13. He is a sweet boy who loves people and having a belly rub. Hector will benefit from a home that is active; he loves to walk and when he’s regularly exercised his resource guarding behaviour improves dramatically. A tired dog is a happy dog we always say. Overall Hector is beautifully trained. He is fantastic to handle and friendly and social with everyone he meets. He’s a dream dog in a lot of ways and needs a home committed to working through his anxieties and not setting him up to fail by placing him in situations where he is likely to be anxious. We are incredibly confident in a dog free/child free home he will be the easiest dog in the world.

Hector is housebroken, crate trained, non destructive in the home and happy to be left for reasonable durations of time. Hector is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped and will be subject to a home check and adoption donation.

Pupcakes offer all adopters 4 weeks free insurance with Petplan and a complimentary voucher for a box of free food from “Nutriment Raw.”
