Ruby and Quaky – 11 year old female and 9 year old male Cavalier King Charles Spaniels

Ruby is an 11-year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Quacky is her 9-year old son. They are being fostered in Berkshire. Ruby is full of life and interested in what everyone is getting up to, and likes to let you know if she approves or not, and if you are getting that dinner ready quickly enough for her! Quacky is an affectionate gentle boy who is eager to please, but not as confident as his mum. Both dogs are very happy around people and are happy to have fuss and attention. Ruby is a bit uncomfortable with her feet and legs being touched, but she has sore legs so to be expected.

Ruby can be a little reserved when she first meets new people, but once she has the measure of you she will ask for tummy tickles, give little kisses and loves to snuggle on the sofa if you help her up and down. Generally, though, no problems being touched, in fact they crave it and love contact. They have met and got on well with two older female collies in their foster home. Quacky was nervous for the first 48 hours and would rush up to the collies barking right in their faces when they moved, but once he knew he was safe this passed and he enjoyed being part of the pack. Not cat tested. Both will bark at and chase birds.

Ruby and Quacky are not keen on being left at home and will bark. Both are housetrained. They love a snuggle on the sofa if you help them up and down. Quacky is a ‘velcro’ dog and does love to be at his human’s side wherever possible. Both pull slightly and bark a lot initially when leaving the house and are very excited. They absolutely love being out and about – they love to march around the park side by side and with tails wagging in unison. Both will bark at the sight of other dogs and then find it hard to stop. Ruby just has a bit more confidence and interest in the walk rather than who might be about, she did have a lovely hello with a little schnauzer.

Ruby and Quacky need someone who is willing to work with the barking and are prepared to have a first few difficult weeks as they settle in. They need someone around a lot of the day and/ or able to put time in getting them used to being left. Both want to be involved in what you’re doing, love human company and physical contact. They thrive on routine and knowing what’s coming next.

Please note: Ruby and Quacky need a family who are committed to their health needs. Ruby has a heart murmur but no clinical signs of heart failure. Quacky has a slight heart murmur and both dogs are on Vetmedin. This pair also need to lose weight – Quacky needs to go from 18.9kg down to about 12kg; Ruby needs to go from 12.9kg to around 11.5kg or as light as possible to help her knee. New owner needs to really commit to that weight loss to give them both the best quality of life possible.

Ruby’s legs are quite bad generally. Her new family may need to make adaptions in the home so that Ruby can be involved as much as possible without straining her joints. Ruby also has some LHS facial paralysis and a tilt, but she manages well. There will be no adoption donation required for Ruby due to her ongoing health issues. FOAW will continue to pay for her non-routine vet bills and medication. Quacky will be subject to the usual adoption donation

Please remember, if you have a dog and it is not neutered, it is against our policies to re-home a dog with you. Ruby is NOT spayed at the moment due to her health issues. Quacky is neutered. Both dogs are fully vaccinated, microchipped, flea and worm treated. Potential adopters will be expected to travel to meet them in their foster home in Berkshire.

If you are interested in adopting Ruby and Quacky please read about our rehoming process and complete a Pre-Adoption form ( link here ) and one of our adoption coordinators will contact you for a chat.
