Garrick – 6-8 year old male Terrier

Garrick is a 6-8 year old male Terrier. He came to us from the pound, he was picked up as a stray and never reclaimed. He was very subdued and confused when he arrived, understandably grieving for his owner. We have estimated Garrick to be between 6-8 years old, but with no owner to clarify, we are very much in the dark with his history, we do know he is an adorable little lad once he knows you and loves nothing more than snuggles with you!

Garrick is a fantastic little Terrier, and unlike most Terriers, he is quite the couch potato! Loves a ball, loves water, and loves to get mucky! Garrick would make a great friend for an active older person or persons, he is a very adaptable little lad.

Garrick is a gorgeous smooth coat Terrier, one of the most laid back dogs I have ever met! He loves walks and is a bit on the tubby side so gentle exercise for him, Garrick is very affectionate and loves to cuddle up next to you. He is clean in the house and fine with other dogs, but he would probably prefer to be the only dog as that seems to be what he is used to. Garrick would prefer an adult only home. He has not been tested with cats.

He is neutered and microchipped, de flead, wormed and had a dental when he arrived. Garrick is just so adorable and needs a loving home to see out his twilight years in comfort, warmth and lots of love.

Please can someone find room in their homes and hearts for this wonderful little man?

Basil – 10 year old male Cross-Breed

Basil is a ten year old medium to large sized male Cross-Breed. He is fostered near Norwich. Poor Basil was in the Botosani shelter in Romania for quite some time. Suffering from a skin condition, underweight and generally feeling uncomfortable and fed up. This made him understandably quite grumpy and he didn’t let anybody at the shelter get close to him. When Basil arrived here he was in a sorry state but seemed to understand that we were able to give him the help and care that he needs now and was instantly happy to be around us and quite affectionate. Several weeks on and Basil has put a lot of weight on and his fur has started to grow back. His treatment will be ongoing for a few more weeks but we are satisfied with his progress and keen for him to continue his care in a new home after lock down is over.

Basil can still be a little sensitive with some areas of his body being touched so we are looking for an adult home for him. He can live with other dogs but is still a but protective over his breakfast so needs to be fed separately. He doesn’t really enjoy the company of boisterous dogs but is quite happy to be a companion to more steady dogs. The dogs are vaccinated, microchipped and neutered (unless they are too young).

Josh – 4 year old male Cross-Breed

Josh is a four your old medium sized male Cross-Breed, fostered near Norwich. He was rescued from the Botosani public shelter in Romania where he’d spent most of his life. He was terrified and untouchable in the shelter but once here in a UK foster home he advanced rapidly. From the moment he arrived he would follow his foster family around and lie by their feet at every opportunity. He was very hand shy for a long time and would approach enthusiastically but duck away at the last second if a hand was put out.

Now though he is the most devoted and loving dog you could meet. There are still times he flinches at human hands but will curl up on human laps and snooze on the sofa whilst being stroked. He may always be wary around strangers but with those that take the time to earn his love and trust he is just a delight.

Josh gets on very well with other dogs. He lives with dog savvy children in his foster home but in a normal domestic environment would be better placed with children over 12. He travels well in a car and can be left at home for periods of time with no issues.

Our adoption fee is £250. The dogs are vaccinated, microchipped and neutered (unless they are too young). If you are interested please message or call between 9am and 6pm.

Dog etiquette is important no matter what type of home you live in, but ensuring your pup has proper manners when living in an apartment or condo is even more critical as public space is tight and shared with many pet parents and dogs. With a little creativity and consistency in their training routine, your urban dog will learn the dos and don’ts of canine city life. Check out these five tips to help you both live your best life at your apartment and all public areas like the elevator, lobby and sidewalks:

Tip 1: Be a Good Neighbor

Incessant dog barking is not only annoying to you but to your neighbor as well. A dog can be triggered when they hear something they can’t see like someone walking in a hallway or by your patio. Incorporate the three Rs to curb your dog’s barking:

Reward: Praise your dog when they hear noises and are quiet

Redirect: Instead of reprimanding and getting them excited, redirect their focus

Routine: Dogs thrive off of routine as it makes them feel safe. Keep your dog’s schedule consistent, especially when it comes to exercise. Tired dogs are happy and well-behaved which means they’re less concerned with what is going on around them.

Tip 2: Elevator Etiquette

The unknown space and movement of an elevator can be an overwhelming and frightening experience for a dog of any size. Instead of forcing your dog to take a ride, work with your pup to desensitize their fear.

Start by standing three feet away from the elevator and having your pup sit. As the door opens, give them treats. This occupies the dog as they cannot sit and pull into the elevator at the same time. Once the dog is inside the elevator, make sure they sit as they need to know this is a common area and not like a dog park where they can jump and play. When the doors close, you want them to be comfortable in the tight space especially with other dogs. Be on the lookout for stress signs like a yawn, lip lick or if they look away. If your pup exhibits any of these signs, it’s time to rework the training by taking the stairs and slowly incorporating short elevator rides.

Tip 3: Lobby Manners

A building lobby is a highly trafficked area with lots of noise and smells which can incite excitement or stress. It’s important to respect others using the space by keeping your dog near you, calm and well behaved.

Whether you’re standing or walking through the lobby, your dog should always be on a short leash, the expandable ones are unsafe and can lead to wandering. If you find yourself preoccupied, such as getting the mail or reading a notice on the door, step on the leash a few feet from the collar to prevent your pup from suddenly pulling away.

You will frequently encounter other dogs that live in your complex. Your pup will get excited and want to make a new friend. Don’t assume other pet parents will be okay with your dog coming up to theirs. Be sure to ask them for permission and follow the ABCs:

A = Ask: Find out if it’s okay for your dog to greet theirs

B = Brief: Keep the interactions short and positive

C = Chat: Keep chatting when your dogs first meet. It can make your dog nervous if you suddenly get quiet

Tip 4: Exercise and Socialization

Properly exercised dogs are happy, well-behaved dogs. In an urban environment, dog daycare is the best way to provide your pup with socialization and playtime in a safe environment.

Dog parks, while seen as a fun and convenient option, are riddled with safety and socialization concerns. No vaccinations are required which means you could be exposing your pup to things like canine cough, parainfluenza and more. And, while it seems like it’s all fun and games, often times dogs are not properly socialized and playtime can quickly escalate into serious encounters resulting in injuries.

Often seen as a viable option, dog walking services can be unreliable and expose your home and dog to a stranger who is not properly trained in canine behavior. Plus, outside plans are often cancelled with bad weather.

Always be prepared with a leash, water and blanket. Using a blanket in public, will provide your dog a safe place to lay down, stay out of the way and clean in public spaces. Introduce the blanket at home, lead the dog there and say “place” and toss a treat on it.

Give your dog something to do while you socialize with friends and family in a public space. Remember to bring their favorite treat or toy to keep them engaged and out of mischief.

Monitor for dangers on the ground. Don’t let them eat unhealthy scraps or foreign objects that could cause healthy issues. And, be cognizant of the temperature and their paws, not letting them overheat in the summer or freeze in the winter.

Take note of your dog’s behavior when you’re out and about. If you find them anxious or exhibiting stress signals, don’t force them to go out. Not all pups are social butterflies. Dog daycare is a great option for them to play and burn off energy. Find a Dogtopia near you.

Jessica – 5 year old female Terrier

Jessica is fostered in Hingham Norfolk. She is a small, five year old Terrier. Jessica spent many years in a public shelter and no human ever touched her to our knowledge. It’s extra tough on the small dogs trying to survive in an environment where dogs of all sizes, strengths and temperaments are bundled in together and then left unsupervised. Jessica is a plucky little terrier and I’m sure she’s faced dangers along the way that we couldn’t even bear to think about, but this girl has spirit and she’s come through it with her sense of humour intact.

Jessica was initially very scared and shy but her inquisitive nature has led her to push herself to experience all of the benefits of a domestic home and she’s learnt to love her new life. Where she used to avoid touch at all cost she is now coming forward for attention and us enjoying it. She is still hesitant with new people but us very good motivated so it doesn’t take long at all to befriend her.

Jessica LOVES her walks and is very good running freely in the woods having the time of her life. After spending so much of her life in a shelter never leaving her cage she is now living life to the full and will run and run and run. She is not suitable for a home where a potter around the block is all that’s on offer.

Jessica gets on well with other dogs but when play gets a bit rough she can cop a strop and start telling the other dogs in typical terrier fashion. We have tested her with cats and in introduction did not appear to be the least but interested in them. Jessica needs a home with no young children and with experienced adopters that enjoy the path to winning her trust. Our adoption fee is £250. The dogs are vaccinated, microchipped and neutered (unless they are too young).

Thanks To You, Fern Is Off The Streets Now

After living as a stray on the street, little Fern ended up at the Porterville Shelter in California. Through divine intervention, START Rescue selected her for transport out of this high-risk area to Oregon. Once up northwest, Fern ended up at Oregon Dog Rescue. A no-kill shelter outside of Portland, Oregon Dog Rescue is one of START’s partner receiving organizations.

Fern found her forever home from there, and will never ever look back on her life as a stray. Her new family absolutely loves to pamper her.

“Fern has been such a joy to have. She has the cutest, most bubbly personality. She is sweet, sensitive, and smart. Within the first two months, she could sit, stay, shake, lay down, rollover, and dance. She goes everywhere with us, sleeps in the bed, and is spoiled rotten. She loves the dog park too. Thank you so much; we love her to pieces.”

Just look at this precious gal and imagine her living on the streets. It just doesn’t seem right.

START Rescue does the important work to change so many dogs’ outcomes. Thanks for supporting us so we can support them!

Why Transport To The Pacific Northwest?

The simple answer is that Oregon and Washington states are less populated than California. This region lacks the out-of-control animal population that California’s overcrowded shelters and homeless strays indicate.

According to START Rescue’s website:

“Because Oregon and Washington are not oversaturated with unwanted, abandoned and homeless pets, our Rescue Partners are quite successful in adopting out our transported passengers to loving forever homes. Simply stated, our Rescue Partners “need” dogs (and cats) as much as we need, and we are grateful to them.”

START transports monthly to vetted contracted partners in the Pacific Northwest. The rescued animals usually come from California shelters and rescuers in Mexico.

The whole process begins when START provides their Rescue Partners with links to the inventory of at-risk animals. Then, those Rescue Partners make their choices for the upcoming transport.  The dogs are examined and receive all vaccinations prior to loading up on a truck. 

Once they arrive, the NW shelters work on rehoming these formerly doomed animals!

You Helped Save This Pup After A Rancher Shot Her

Because of loyal customers like you, many dogs get a second chance at life all thanks to these donations. Lilith is just one of the many dogs that have benefitted from iHeartDogs products.

Lilith is an Aussie mix who spent the beginning of her life alone in the middle of nowhere. She was just a young dog, only about 15 months old. The poor little pup was wandering around California one day when she got into trouble. She came across some irrigation tubing and chewed on it like any curious puppy would. A rancher was furious when he saw what she did, and he shot the innocent pup. Lilith was in critical need of medical attention, so START Rescue came to save her.

START brought Lilith to safety and nursed her back to health. Once she was feeling better, they put her on a transport to bring her closer to her forever home. The transport took her to Reedsport K9 Shelter in Oregon, where she was given the name Leela and put up for adoption.

At the shelter, Lilith was adopted almost instantly. After all, her big ears and adorable smile made her irresistible. Her new family didn’t think the name Leela suited her, so they renamed her Lilith. On the ride home from the shelter, she looked like the happiest pup in the world.

Lilith loves going for walks and exploring the outdoors with her new parents. She is such a happy dog that you’d never even realize she had a rough start to life. Her new family brings out the best in her.

If it weren’t for the help of iHeartDogs and Greater Good, Lilith might not have survived being shot. She could’ve passed away before she even knew what a loving family was like. But thanks to all the amazing dog lovers involved, Lilith was rescued and brought to safety. Now, she’s living her best life!

Pregnant Woman’s Boyfriend Asks Her to Give Up Dog For A New Apartment

A young couple who are expecting a baby are currently living in a small one bedroom apartment with their dog of five years. Anticipating the need for more space once the baby arrives, they decided to start looking for a bigger place. The boyfriend found an ideal apartment that lacked one important thing: they do not allow pets. He shocked the future mother of his child by asking her to give her beloved dog up. You can probably guess how that went over!

Just Get Rid of Her

The woman took to Reddit to air her grievance and see how other users felt about the sticky situation. She explained in her original post that she is four months pregnant and they want to move into an apartment with at least two bedrooms. Her boyfriend found a complex nearby their current one bedroom place that is fancy and filled with desirable amenities. The catch? The don’t allow pets. The girlfriend said on Reddit, “He asked me to just get rid of her or give her to my parents.” You know, like the dog is an old couch or outdated appliance rather than a living, breathing member of the family. Ugh!

He Accused Her of Being the Selfish One

Obviously the girlfriend refused to give up her dog to move into an apartment. She has been in a relationship with her pup for longer than she has her boyfriend. She loves her dog and views her as a family member with the lifetime commitment that implies. As she pointed out on Reddit, there are plenty of dog-friendly two bedroom apartments that are suitable and available in their area. But her boyfriend had the nerve to call her selfish, insinuating that she was putting her own needs above those of their unborn child. As if! She said, “He told me that I’m being selfish for not wanting to give her up. That I should put our baby first.” Seems like the boyfriend is the only one being selfish here, choosing apartment amenities and style over a devoted furry friend.

Users Suggest She Get Rid of the Boyfriend Instead

Many of the Reddit users that responded to her post suggested a solution that would allow the girlfriend to keep her current one bedroom apartment and her dog. Get rid of the boyfriend instead! After all, he’s showing some less-than-flattering true colors that may be giant red flags for their future. Anyone willing to just dump a loved one in favor of a tricked-out apartment complex may not be the long-term partner a dog-loving woman and her human baby needs.

Pit Bull Darling Stands Guard As Cat Gives Birth

Good hearts take care of those in need, no matter who or what species they happen to be.

And Hades the Pitbull proved this to be true when Nicol the cat found herself in a most vulnerable moment.

Nicol was a stray cat, hanging around the neighborhood but not letting anyone get too close. Still, Hades would help his dad, Juan José P. Flores, put food out for the lady cat.

And Hades animal intuition recognized something the humans of the neighborhood didn’t. Nicol was pregnant. And when the time came for her kittens to be born, Hades was there to protect her and her newborns.

Proud Pitbull Papa

The day the kittens were born, Hades was outside, making a lot of racket to get his dad’s attention. Juan, a dentist in Mexico, recalled, “He was desperate and making a lot of noise.”

When Juan went outside to see what had Hades bumping about, he was surprised at what he found.

Nicol was cozied into Hades’ doghouse with Hades standing at the entrance. But the dog wasn’t upset the cat was in his house. In fact, just the opposite. Hades was quite pleased to be Nicol’s guardian as she brought life into the world.

“He dragged a blanket over to the entrance of his house and settled outside the door,” shared Juan.

“She felt protected by him.”

While posted at the door, Hades watched as Nicol delivered two healthy kittens!

 

“I think he felt that he was a father,” speculated Juan.

While Juan was stunned to find his dog helping to birth kittens, he already knew Hades was a hound with the kindest of hearts. So, finding him protecting a soul in need wasn’t a surprise. And Juan thinks Hades has set an example the world should follow. “Hades put everything aside to help someone else. We should do the same without expecting anything in return.”

Simply put, Juan said, “Pit bulls are good dogs.”

Juan and Hades have it right, and from their kindness has risen an unlikely friendship.

Cat and Dog Become Best Buds

Juan moved the new mother and her kittens into the house and, of course, Hades was there to help. And when Nicol isn’t busy with the kittens, she and Hades enjoy hanging out together. The furry pair have already made it known to their humans, Nicol will be staying.

Thanks to Hades the dog’s kind heart, Nicol the cat gave birth in safety, and now, she’s found her forever home.
