Scientists Predict Dogs Will Begin Speaking By 2045

Have you ever wished your dog could talk? Of course you have! Maybe you have already learned how to communicate with your dog. You can probably tell the different inflections in their cries or yelps and you can hear different types of barks. But, what if dogs could actually talk? Like full-on communication with words.

Here’s good news: Scientists say it’s possible. Scientists partnered with the MIT Department of Linguistics and veterinarians to complete a study on the subject. What they found is remarkable!

“Our double-blind study found that dogs who were exposed to 30 minutes of intensive speech and language therapy every day began developing human-like speech within eight months,” said Patrick Elliott, postdoctoral associate at MIT. “When we compared dogs who received speech and language therapy to our control group, the dogs who received therapy developed syntax and semantics similar to 18-month-old humans.”

Don’t Plan On Having Stimulating Discussions With Fido Yet

The evidence is striking but scientists recommend we don’t rejoice just yet. Because languages typically develop over several generations, we shouldn’t expect to see dogs speaking in full sentences until 2045, according to the experts. The study examined the dogs’ brains with periodic MRIs throughout their therapy. Imaging showed the dogs receiving therapy had significantly increased activity in their cerebral cortex and higher rates of blood flow in their medulla oblongata.

@NewcastleClinic/Facebook

Also interesting to note was that some breeds responded better to the therapy than others. Yorkshire Terriers, Golden Retrievers, and Boston Terriers were amongst the highest achieving breeds. Many of these pups began speaking their first word around 6.5 months into speech and language therapy. On the other hand, Pugs never developed speech past grunting, snorts, and snores (sorry Pug mamas!)

“Our pugs in the study were quite entertaining. They loved showering us with love and affection, but their attention to detail was lacking, to put it nicely. Beatlejuice was one of our participants who liked to wander out of the therapy room and into the kitchen down the hall,” said onsite animal behaviorist Haley Dougherty. “Pugs do not show promising results for any hope of brain development suitable for intelligible speech in the future. But they’re adorable, so there’s that.”

The study included eight purebred dogs and four mixed breeds. Here is a complete list of the participants:

  • Twiggles – Finnish Spitz
  • Bartholemew – Pug/Weimaraner Mix
  • Beatlejuice – Pug
  • Paul – Chihuahua
  • Steve-O – Dachshund/Unknown
  • Peaches – Golden Retriever
  • Jimmy Chew – Rat Terrier/Peruvian Inca Orchid
  • Pancake – Yorkshire Terrier
  • Smitty – Boston Terrier
  • Pickles – Pitbull/Bichon
  • Torque – Miniature Poodle
  • Halligan – Xoloitzcuintle

Look Who’s Talking!

We know you’re wondering how you can try to teach your dog to talk. Believe us, we’re trying too! Here’s what the experts say:

“Set aside 30 minutes per day with no distractions. Speak to your dog directly. Speak slowly and clearly, much like when you’re trying to speak to someone with a language barrier. It’s the same concept,” said Elliott. “It also helps if you lower your voice. The participants seemed to respond better to male voices.”

If your pup still isn’t asking for treats or the potty a few months in, don’t give up just yet. The study also showed that only 78.4% of the dogs developed spontaneous speech within the first year. And, if you’re wondering, this is the official word list the team used to teach the dogs:

  • Sausage
  • Lunchbox
  • Periwinkle
  • Pickaxe
  • Rat

Curious what word was said first? Pickaxe! Pancake was the first doggo to get it out! Now, the next question is, what word will your dog say first? Share your training videos!

US warship captain seeks crew isolation as virus spreadsThe captain of a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier facing a growing outbreak of the coronavirus is asking for permission to isolate the bulk of his roughly 5,000 crew members on shore, which would take the warship out of duty in an effort to save lives. In a memo to Navy leaders, the captain of the USS Theodore Roosevelt said that the spread of the disease is ongoing and accelerating and that removing all but 10% of the crew is a “necessary risk” in order to stop the spread of the virus. Navy leaders on Tuesday were scrambling to determine how to best respond to the extraordinary request as dozens of crew members tested positive.

Hundreds Of FL Greyhounds Need Homes Due To Coronavirus-Related Track Closure

The spread of COVID-19 forced the closure of many businesses over the last few weeks, worldwide. Among them are the last remaining Greyhound racing tracks in Florida. Dog racing is illegal in most states, though some continue to allow it.

Florida’s tracks were already officially set to shut down in December of this year. Florida voters decided to end Greyhound racing back in 2018. Nearly 70% voted to pass Amendment 13, which bans the sport by the end of 2020. Several dog racing tracks already closed voluntarily. Some remained operational. The tracks closing now decided to remain closed instead of re-opening just to shut down again.

The early track closures left several retired racing dogs in Florida in an abrupt limbo. Volunteers have already been working to rescue and rehome former racing dogs, but there are a lot in need. Awesome Greyhound Adoptions shared a poster on Facebook along with a request for foster homes last week.

@AwesomeGreyhoundAdoptions/Facebook

“FOSTER HOMES NEEDED IN SE FL for retired racing greyhounds. The virus has caused early shut down of two tracks and these dogs need places to go while waiting for forever homes. NOW IS THE TIME TO STEP UP FLORIDA PEEPS … “

Fortunately, the organization indicated they had been “swamped with replies.” Timing and a little TV exposure were on their side.

“AGA has received a tremendous response via email, phone & Facebook to the three major TV spots about the need for fosters in the SE FL area. We have been swamped with over 1000 emails (enough to cause Barbara’s email account to crash) and Facebook messages and at least 500 phone calls! We are trying to get to all of them ASAP.”

Still, it never hurts to reach out if you’re local and able to foster a Greyhound! Call the organization at (561) 737-1941 or visit their page for more information.

How To Rescue A Greyhound If You Don’t Live In Florida

@AwesomeGreyhoundAdoptions/Facebook

If you want to adopt a Greyhound but don’t live locally, look into other rescues that rehabilitate retired racers. For example, these organizations all share similar missions:

Now, while we have this time to spend at home, is a great time to foster or adopt a dog! Greyhounds make loving, loyal companions. They’ll be forever grateful for you.

Impatient Dog Won’t Stop Telling His Dad He Wants A Kitten

Dogs and cats have a long history of not getting along. Many people still believe that these animals are destined to be enemies despite all the dog and cat friends on the internet. In fact, some dogs actually love cats more than anything else.

A big dog named Clyde is an example of a dog who’s obsessed with cats. He has always wanted a kitten friend of his own, so he makes sure his dad knows. In a hilarious video, his dad films Clyde’s reaction to him visiting the pet store.

Image: Screenshot, Talking Animals YouTube

A Talking Dog?

After returning from a pet store, Clyde’s dad decided to record a video of himself talking to his dog. But in this video, Clyde actually responds! His voice even sounds exactly like what you’d expect a dog to sound like.

As soon as his dad tells him he went to the pet store, Clyde immediately gets excited about the idea of a kitten sibling. His dad describes Clyde’s dream kitten, and of course, the big dog gets excited. He bounces around, ready to meet his new friend.

However, his dad starts going on about the other animals he saw instead. He talks about the snakes, turtles, and hamsters, but it’s clear that Clyde’s growing impatient. Whenever his dad mentions a cat though, Clyde is thrilled.

Image: Screenshot, Talking Animals YouTube

It seems like his dad will continue the charade for a while longer, but a tiny meow interrupts their conversation. Finally, his dad reveals that he picked up one of the shelter kittens. Clyde can’t contain his excitement! He bounces around as his dad leads him to his new kitten friend.

The Man Behind the Video

Clyde’s video was created as a promotion for a campaign called Pets Add Life. It was made to promote responsible dog and cat ownership. Of course, it was also there to add humor to everyone’s day as well.

Image: Screenshot, Talking Animals YouTube

This hilarious video was created and voiced by Andrew Grantham. He makes comedic videos like this full-time. He’s most well-known for the silly video called ‘Ultimate Dog Tease’, where the dad teases his talking dog by discussing delicious food. He eventually tells the dog that he already ate all the food and gave some to the cat too. As you can imagine, the dog in that video is even more frustrated than Clyde!

If your dog could talk, what would they have to say? It’s funny to imagine how dogs would behave if they could speak, and these videos perfectly capture that fantasy. If you want to see more videos like this one, check out the Talking Animals YouTube channel!

Drone Walks Dog For Quarantined Man During Coronavirus Outbreak

As the impact of COVID-19 continues to grow, many people across the globe must stay at home to avoid other people. Walking your dog is, of course, considered an important exception. We can’t exactly let our pups do their business inside, and most don’t know how to use toilets. Still, even taking regular walks through the neighborhood induces anxiety. Sometimes, other pedestrians pass by too closely for comfort.

A dog parent in Cyprus came up with a clever way around all of that. He let someone else do his dog walking. Well, something else. A now-viral video shows a pup being walked down the street by a drone. A leash connects the landing gear to the totally unaffected dog.

Vakis Demetriou posted the video in the midst of self-isolation, along with some useful advice:

“Stay home to be safe, but don’t forget your dog happiness.”

As far as we know, there’s no evidence to suggest dogs can transfer the virus to people. While there is such a thing as canine coronavirus, dogs don’t seem to be impacted by this particular strain. So, the thought of walking around the neighborhood doesn’t make them so nervous these days.

Though there’s something new at the end of its leash, the dog doesn’t seem to mind. He strolls along happy as ever on his regular walk. From his porch, Demetriou controls the drone. Don’t worry, he always had his eye on his dog.

@NXD Shutter BOX/YouTube

Some dogs scare easily at the sounds a drone makes. After all, they don’t sound too different from a vacuum. Not this pup though. He’s just glad to get out!

People online have pointed out one important question: who’s picking up the dog’s waste? Is that a drone capability as well? Unfortunately, we’re left with only our best guesses to these questions.

Watch the social distance approved stroll below:

I must say, even though this is a troubling time, dog content has been extremely comforting. Tons of kind families have stepped up to foster and adopt animals while stuck at home. In general, people have more time to sit around taking videos of their cute animals too. These are the stories we want cluttering up our feeds right now. In fact, they’re the stories we need.

If you’ve come up with a creative way to keep your pup happy in the time of self-isolation, let us know and we’ll share. Stay safe and stay home!

Maisie – 10 year old female Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Hi! I’m Maisie, and very loving and gentle black and white 10 year old female Staffordshire Bull Terrier. I may be classed as a mature lady but I’m pretty fit and lively and I am so excited to meet new people and get as much fuss as I can!

Maisie is approx 39 cm tall, so quite the right height for a classic Staffordshire Bull Terrier. She loves her walks and is very fit, she can be quite strong but she’s very energetic. Maisie has a good body weight and a shiny healthy coat. This is a girl who loves life!

How she got to be abandoned in the pound we just don’t know, as she is lovely. She is friendly and doesn’t seem to be bothered about other dogs, just does her own thing. Loves cuddles and is a lovely girl.

Maisie is fairly new to us. She seems to be house trained – we haven’t had any accidents inside and she normally ‘asks’ to go outside by going near the backdoor. She doesn’t seem bothered by other dogs – she’s curious and looks but no aggression. She doesn’t bark. She is very friendly and active! She eventually settled down with us when we watching tv.

Current location is in a foster home in Birmingham, West Midlands.

Tips for Camping with Dogs

What to Pack

Gear can make or break a camping trip, but that doesn’t mean you need everything under the sun. Here are some of the basics to keep you and your dog comfortable and safe without going overboard.

Tent

If your pup is a medium-sized dog or larger, you’ll probably want to size up your tent. Think of your dog as another person, especially if he sprawls out to sleep. Two humans and one dog? Consider a three-person tent. One human and two dogs? Cool Whip and Hercules each weigh about 70 pounds, and they typically curl up like donuts, so the three of us fit in a spacious, two-person tent.

As an accessory for the tent, bring a sheet or blanket to spread out on the floor. Your dog’s claws can poke holes in the tent, and the sheet will protect the floor and also makes it easy to shake out any dirt or grass you track inside.

Sleeping Gear

Just like you, your dog will enjoy soft, cozy place to sleep. Look for a dog bed or sleeping bag made for the outdoors. These beds and sleeping bags are typically more durable and water-resistant, so you don’t have to worry about it getting damaged with some rugged use.

If you’re hiking to your campsite, be conscious of the weight and size of your gear. Neither you nor your dogs want to lug around a heavy backpack! While there are a lot of options for dog camping gear, not everything has to be dog-specific. My go-to dog bed for camping is a regular inflatable sleeping pad.

Cool Whip and Hercules used to beeline for my half of the tent that had the puffy sleeping pad. I learned quickly their lightweight dog beds weren’t cozy enough. Now, I pack two inflatable sleeping pads (one for me and one for them) that each pack down to the size of a soda can. They’re lightweight and easily fit in my backpack or Herc’s, which leads to our next type of gear…

Leashes and Backpacks

Most campgrounds require dogs to be on a leash at all times, so a zip line gives your dog a little freedom while still keeping him safely leashed at your campsite. Plus, your hands are free for other activities, like making s’mores!

If you’ll be hiking dog friendly trails, consider getting a backpack for your dog. Your dog can help carry some of their own supplies and it gives some dogs the sense of having a job to do. Not sure what backpack to pick? We’ve got you covered with our guide to picking the best backpack for your dog.

Food and Bowls

It’s not always convenient to bring the whole bag of dog food when you’re camping with dogs. Instead, look for a kibble carrier. There are roll-top dry bags and other sorts of containers designed to make it easy for transporting dog food. Or go basic—I like to pack my dog food in a 15-quart, clear plastic bin. In fact, that’s how I pack a lot of my gear, because it’s easy to see what’s inside, they stack well, and they keep everything organized in the car.

Next, leave the ceramic food dishes at home—probably not the best thing to bring into the wilderness. Pick up metal or plastic dishes that won’t break. Or, even better, get bowls made from flexible, collapsible materials that are also easy to pack in your hiking or backpacking pack. Bonus: You and your dog will have extra room for snacks!

Miscellaneous

First aid kit – Accidents happen, even on vacation. In addition to standard first aid gear, include your pet’s medical records, contact info for you and your vet, a recent picture in case they get lost, hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting of harmful ingestions, Benadryl for allergic reactions, and self-cling bandaging tape (vet wrap).

Lighting – Think headlamp, flashlight, LED collar, etc. These items are good for safety’s sake and in case your pup needs a late-night bathroom break or if you’re staying outside to watch the stars.

Treats – Reward good behavior, especially if it’s your first camping trip or when you’re encouraging them to pose for what seems to them like the millionth photo.

Woman in a tent with two dogs

Waste bags – You can never bring too many poop bags. Always pick up after your pet, plus these are great for picking up trash you come across that you don’t want to touch with your hands.

Treats – Oh, did we mention this already?? Whoops! Better add another bag, just in case. ;)

Gear for inclement conditions – It isn’t always 65 and sunny, so be sure to check the forecast and pack accordingly. The same goes for the terrain; consider packing dog boots to protect paws from hot pavement or rough trails.

How to Prepare for Camping with Your Dog

Test out your gear before you leave home: Set up your tent, pack your backpack, practice making your zip line, etc.

Do a practice night out in your backyard, at a nearby campsite, or even in your living room. The goal is to make sure your dog is comfortable in the tent. You don’t want to be out in the wilderness or hours from home only to find out your pup is scared of the sound the tent fabric makes in the wind.

Dog laying in a green tent

The same concept applies to campfires and your dog’s backpack. Make sure your dog is okay with the experience at home before you’re in a place where everything is new to them.

Assess your own gear as well if you’re trying anything new. Is your sleeping pad comfortable? Is your backpack too heavy with the extra dog gear? Sort it all out at home to avoid surprises when you set off on your trip.

Where to Go

There are many options for camping with dogs, whether they be state parks, national parks, or private parks—it doesn’t matter. Even parks that have minimal pet-friendly trails usually allow dogs in the campgrounds. So, you can still enjoy time outside with your dog even if you’re not hiking.

READ MORE ⇒  Pet Friendly Campgrounds at National Parks

Two pitbull dogs on a camping trip to the Curlew National Grasslands

If you’re seeking a place with fewer people, check out national forest campgrounds. National forests, along with national grasslands, often have primitive campsites (pit toilets and no electricity) that operate on a first-come-first-served basis. These areas and BLM land may also have dispersed camping options.

Camping With Minimal Investment

By now you might be worried that camping with your dog is going to require a major investment in gear. Especially if you don’t know if you or your dogs will enjoy it.

Luckily, you can start out by finding inexpensive gear at yard sales. Or rent equipment the first time. REI stores sell used gear and also rent it. Outdoors Geek will ship rental gear to you. And some colleges and universities have outdoor recreation clubs (like Cornell Outdoor Education) that rent gear to the general public.

Just remember. If you rent equipment, you are responsible for returning it clean. Make sure you have a good plan for cleaning up pet hair as well as human dirt and messes.

However and where ever you decide to go camping with dogs, the most important part is to relax and have fun!
