The White House’s hopes of rolling out its Israeli-Palestinian peace plan this year were in chaos yesterday after Benjamin Netanyahu plunged Israel into unexpected new elections. During a meeting with Jared Kushner, Donald Trump’s son-in-law and top aide on Middle East peace, Mr Netanyahu attempted to downplay the political turmoil in his country as “a little event”. But officials and analysts said the Israeli elections in September were likely to delay the peace plan and could cause it to be shelved altogether. One US official suggested it may now have to have wait until Mr Trump’s second term. The Palestinians, who are refusing to engage with the US on the peace plan, delighted in the prospect of its delay. Saeb Erekat, a senior Palestinian official, said the plan sometimes described as “the Deal of the Century” should now be called “the Deal of Next Century”. The While House deliberately waited until after the Israeli election in April to make any moves on its peace initiative, hoping that a delay would spare Mr Netanyahu any political discomfort during his campaign. Letters from Jerusalem RHS When Mr Netanyahu appeared to easily win a fifth term in office, Mr Kushner and his aides began making moves to roll out the plan in stages later this year. The economic half of the plan was due to be laid out in a summit in Bahrain in June while the more controversial political half would be made public later. However, Mr Netanyahu unexpectedly failed to form a coalition government and instead spent the early hours of Thursday morning forcing through a bill in parliament to hold fresh elections in September. Speaking in Washington, Mr Trump said Mr Netanyahu’s failed effort to build a coalition was “too bad”. “They don’t need this, I mean they’ve got enough turmoil over there,” the president said. The US State Department indicated that the Bahrain summit would go ahead as planned on June 25 to try to encourage wealthy Arab states and businessmen to invest in Gaza and the occupied West Bank. But it is not clear when, if ever, the world will see the political half of the plan, which deals with more combustible issues like the future of Jerusalem, Israel’s borders, and the fate of millions of Palestinian refugees. “If chances for the success of the Deal of the Century were severely handicapped before last night, the chaos which will be Israel’s lot over the next few months will make it virtually impossible to move forward,” said Shalom Lipner, a former Israeli official now at the Atlantic Council think tank. “If the White House ‘misfires’ and tries to advance prematurely, it risks squandering any opportunity to table a proposal when conditions might be more conducive to progress.” Mr Netanyahu failed to form a coalition before Wednesday’s deadline Credit: REUTERS/Ronen Zvulun The timeline of the new elections means that even if Mr Netanyahu wins again he is unlikely to have a government formed until at least November. His rage was directed at Avigdor Lieberman, his former defence minister who refused to join his government and ultimately caused the coalition talks to fail. “Avigdor Lieberman is now part of the Left,” Mr Netanyahu said. Mr Lieberman shot back that the prime minister’s Likud party was wracked by “hallucinations and schizophrenic reactions” and suggested the party’s leaders needed psychiatric treatment.

America and its allies in the Middle East are planning to present evidence of Iranian complicity in the attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf to the United Nations Security Council, according to US National Security Advisor John Bolton.Speaking in London before Donald Trump’s state visit to the UK next week, Mr Bolton warned that the “threat was not over” from Iran and that the country “will be held accountable.”“There will be strong response,” to any further acts of violence, he added. He accused Tehran of involvement either directly, or through proxy forces, in carrying out attacks on international shipping, oil pipelines and port facilities in neighbouring countries.Mr Bolton made his charge amid rising tension in the region after the US dispatched an aircraft carrier strike group and B52 bombers and ordered the deployment of additional ground troops.It also comes during continuing friction between the Trump administration and Western allies, including Britain, over the Iran nuclear deal.Mr Bolton claimed in Abu Dhabi, on his way to London, that it was “clear that Iran is behind” the attacks on the tankers and that “naval mines almost certainly from Iran” caused the damage to the ships.Tehran has described the charges as “ludicrous,” with the Foreign Ministry declaring that “Iran’s strategic patience, vigilance (and) defensive prowess will defuse mischievous plots made by Bolton and other warmongers”.Mr Bolton has called for regime change in Tehran on numerous occasions in the past, as the Iranian government of Hassan Rouhani has repeatedly pointed out. President Trump stated earlier this year that the US was not seeking regime change and repeated calls for talks with the leadership in Tehran.Asked by The Independent whether he was at odds with the president on this issue of regime change, Mr Bolton said “before I became national security advisor I said and wrote a lot of things on every subject. I believed what I wrote then and I still do. But I am National Security Advisor, not National Security decision maker.“The policy we are pursuing is not a policy of regime change, that’s a fact and everybody should understand that.”However Mr Bolton went on to accuse Iran of involvement in the tanker assaults, adding that “there is some prospect that evidence of this will be presented to the Security Council next week.”“There are a series of meetings under way on this in Saudi Arabia, the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation … I don’t think there’s anybody who is familiar with the situation in the region and have examined the evidence can come to any other conclusion that these attacks were carried out by Iran and its surrogates.“We are looking at all the evidence and we are looking at it in a responsible and prudent fashion … We say there is a lot of activity that goes on in that part of the world which is attributable to Iran because of their prior conduct, because of their statements and because of information that comes into our possession which I am not going to discuss further.”Mr Bolton accused Iran of direct and indirect culpability.“When the Houthis use drones or ballistic missiles, they don’t make them, they get them from somewhere.“I think it’s fair to hold Iran accountable even without more information because of the foreseeable consequences of giving such weapons to the Houthis. In terms of attacks on pipelines, it’s possible the Houthis did it, or it came from somewhere else too, more directly from Iran,” he said.The Houthis, a Yemeni rebel group, claimed responsibility for an attack on a Saudi oil pipeline in mid-May.Differences remained, Mr Bolton acknowledged, between the US and its allies over the Iran nuclear deal. President Trump pulled the US out of the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) and imposed sweeping sanctions on Iran.The other international signatories — Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China— as well as the UN and EU insist that Tehran has adhered to its obligations and are attempting to save the agreement which they say has stopped Iran acquiring nuclear weapons.The European Union is putting together a financial programme which seeks to enable businesses to trade with Iran in the face of US sanctions.Mr Bolton held up the possibility that Britain’s position on supporting the programme may change after Brexit. “By definition as an independent country you can make up your own policy - it’s different once you are outside the European Union,” he said.

Meet Meghan, a 5 year old female Alaskan Malamute, who was sadly picked up as a stray and brought to us for rehoming. Meghan is a sweet girl who knows some basic commands such as sit, paw and stop. Meghan is a gentle giant, with a loving personality, who just wants cuddles and snuggles. Meghan can be quite strong on the lead however is responding well to lead training. She is ideally looking for an owner who has owned or has experience with larger breeds in the past, as well as someone able to give her at least an hour and a half to two hours of exercise a day.

Meghan appears to be good with other dogs when out and about, however would prefer to be the only dog in a home. She could also live with children over the age of 14 years (no cats please). If you would like to foster or adopt Meghan, please fill out a rehoming form.

Billy is a 9 month old male German Shepherd Cross currently fostered in Co. Durham. He is affectionate and adores other dogs. He has a basic level of obedience. He’s going though adolescence at the moment which isn’t the easiest age for a dog!

He has a lot of potential and really needs a home with other dogs as he doesn’t cope so well on his own. He really needs someone who has the time for him. He’s currently in foster with older children, dogs, cats and other animals.

He could potentially be homed with cats but would very much depend on the cat and the amount of training the adopter would do to carefully introduce the animals and create harmony within the home. Billy is a playful pup and loves nothing more than playing with other dogs and with his toys.

Talisha is a 2 year old female Cross-Breed from Romania. Talisha has not long been in foster but according to her foster mum she is doing fabulously and settling like a dream. This girl has a lovely nature and we are so happy she’s been given the chance as she was overlooked while in the shelter.

She gets on with everyone, including the resident dog. She is clean in the house and starting to really enjoy going out for walks and socialising with other dogs. We are seeking a home where her basic training and exposure to new things will continue, building on the work of her foster mum.

Talisha would suit a home with another dog but could be an only dog too, provided her adopter was able to ensure she was socialised regularly. Talisha could live with older children. Loves food! She is a happy and uncomplicated little dog.

Skye is a 2 year old female Saluki cross Greyhound who measures 26 inches to shoulder. She is very affectionate and loves nothing more then cuddling up to you on the sofa. She’s very clean in the house, quite obedient and is always very happy to see you. Although she currently lives with two young children and is good with them, Skye is looking for a quieter, calmer home either with no children or older children 14 plus.

She can be homed as an only dog or with a very confident dog that won’t pay attention to her insecurities. Skye is crated when left and can be left for four hours at a time but is used to being left with another dog. She is crated at night but would also be delighted to share the bed with you given the chance!

Skye walks well on the lead and has reasonably good recall when walked in a secure field. She is dog reactive so will bark and lunge when she sees other dogs this could be fixed with a little time once she is away from her current triggers in her home.

She has lots of canine friends she absolutely adores but does need very slow, careful introductions. Skye is a lovely, wonderful dog to live with but just needs a calmer environment long term. No small furries or cats. Needs someone who can continue her training

Gizmo was brought north from a shelter in Kentucky as a puppy. He was seized in a hoarding case where he was sadly the only survivor from his litter. He was given the name Gizmo from the shelter and his family thought it was a perfect fit.

How Regularly Should I Be Cleaning My Dog’s Ears?

But how often is best when it comes to cleaning your dog’s ears at home? Under-cleaning can allow infection causing yeast and bacteria to build up, while over-cleaning can strip away healthy wax and lead to irritation.

A healthy amount of wax in your dog’s ears actually helps lubricate and protect the delicate skin of the canals from infection. You want that healthy layer to remain, so cleanings should really only be performed when the ears are “dirty.”

The length of time it takes for a dog’s ears to get dirty depends on breed, coat, activity level, wax production, and even humidity. In other words, it varies for every dog. The veterinarians at Banfield recommend once monthly cleanings as a basic rule of thumb for dogs with “normal” ears, however those who swim, roll in the dirt, or have a predisposition to infections (like the breeds listed above) may need weekly or daily cleanings.

Check the ears each time you bathe your pup or after a vigorous play session like a trip to the dog park. A simple wipe of the outer ear and pinna (ear flap) is usually enough for healthy ears that have gotten a bit dirty. Apply a small amount of an appropriate, vet-approved cleanser to a cotton ball and simply swab the easy-to-reach outer folds of the ear. To determine if it is time for a good ear flushing, lift the pinna and look inside. Do you notice dirt, debris or excess brown buildup in the outer ear? If so, it may be time to break out the cleanser and do a more thorough job by cleaning out the L-shaped horizontal ear canal.

When You Should NOT Clean Your Dog’s Ears

However, before you start scrubbing away, make sure that your pooch is not suffering from an ear infection. If you notice any of the following symptoms along with debris or discharge, do not attempt to clean the ears; consult your vet right away:

Odor from the ears
Puritic discharge (pus) or blood
Excess scratching, pawing or rubbing at the ears
Violent head shaking or “ear snapping”
Redness and/or swelling of the pinna or ear canal
Sensitivity or pain when ears are touched

It is important to make sure that your dog always has positive experiences when it comes to home care so that he or she will trust you with these treatments in the future. When in doubt, it’s best to check in with your vet.

Is Your Dog Suffering from a Hot Spot? This $13 Amazon Prime Item Might Help

You may have noticed your dog scratching and licking at an ugly, red oozing spot on his skin. A hot spot. Hot spots are a type of skin infection caused by bacteria. The spots will be red, moist, and irritated that started with your dog’s picking at it, and made worse by bacteria.

The patch can get bigger in just a few hours and will be very painful for your pet. You’re likely to find them on your dog’s head, neck, hips and limbs. You might notice matted fur or hair loss around the area, along with scabbing and oozing. They’re more common in long-haired dogs in the summer, when the temperature and humidity get higher.

Symptoms of Hot Spots in Dogs

Watch out for these symptoms if you think your dog may be suffering from a hot spot:

– Itchy, painful patch of skin
– Continual chewing or licking at site
– Abnormal aggression (associated with painfulness of site)
– Possible depression (associated with painfulness of site)
– Inflammation, redness, and swelling in a localized patch of skin
– Crusted scabs or oozing sores
– Dry scaly skin
– Hair loss
– Moist, matted fur
– Foul odor from lesion

Causes of Hot Spots in Dogs

The hot spot is initially caused by your dog’s frequent fussing with the spot, perhaps due to one of the following reasons:

– Flea allergies
– Cuts or abrasions
– Ear infection/anal gland infection
– Foreign objects (splinters/thorns)
– Food allergies
– Matted fur Insect bites
– Chewing or licking due to stress or boredom

Bacteria grows with the help of heat and humidity, and gives your dog the inflamed, oozy spot.

Diagnosis of Hot Spots in Dogs

Hot spots are full of bacteria, painful and ugly. Cleaning it at home will help a bit, but proper treatment will require a trip to the vet.

Schedule an appointment as soon as possible (remember, these can get much bigger in just a few hours.) Your vet will conduct a physical exam to find out what caused your dog to start picking at the spot before the infection began. Let your vet know when you noticed symptoms, and anything unusual that might have led to the irritation so the vet can consider possible allergens or stressors.

To air it out and determine severity and size, your vet is likely to shave and clean the area. They may also take bacterial samples for diagnosis.

Treatment of Hot Spots in Dogs

Cleaning

Matted hair around the area will need to be shaved and the area cleaned. Remember, hot spots can cause your dog a lot of pain, and pain-related aggressiveness, so it’s best to allow a professional to do it. They can use a topical antiseptic to clean the spot, such as these popular VetWELL Chlorhexadine wipes on Amazon.

Treating Bacterial Infection

Topical or oral antibiotics will be prescribed to kill the bacteria in the wound, and may need to be taken for several weeks.

Treating Initial Irritation

Your vet will want to treat for whatever caused the initial irritation, be it allergies, fleas, anxiety, etc. They may suggest a change in diet, flea treatment, or exercise and play in the case of anxiety.

Medications for Pain and Inflammation

Antihistamines might be prescribed to reduce itchiness, and NSAIDS to reduce inflammation. Do not give your dog anything not approved by your vet.

Dietary supplements

Essential fatty acids may be suggested for pets prone to skin conditions.

Recovery of Hot Spots in Dogs

Depending on the severity, your vet may or may not want to see your dog for follow up appointments. Most hot spots clear up pretty quickly. A cone should be used to keep your dog from continuing to lick and chew the spot.

Regular grooming can prevent hot spots, but if your dog doesn’t get groomed regularly, clipping (or shaving, if appropriate for your dog’s coat) can also help prevent matting. Remember to keep your dog on a prescribed flea control program and maintain a stress free home.

You may not notice the spot healing for a week or two, but the medication is doing it’s job and fur should grow back in 3 – 4 weeks. In severe cases, scarring may be possible. Take your pet back to the vet if the hot spots continue.

Marzo – 3-5 year old male German Short-Haired Pointer

Marzo is a 3-5 year old male German Short-Haired Pointer. His chances were very slim. He appeared hobbling around and with low-level Leshmaniasis in central Spain. People shooed him away and then one of the very few people who do care about the plight of animals was made aware of him.

This amazing girl, Monica, who has helped so many dogs, has spent a fortune having his leg operated on, an op involving plaques and hundreds of screws and which has been a success and he’s now free to run as much as he likes. He’s also finished his course of Leishmaniasis treatment and will now just needs tests and maintenance treatment. One very lucky dog but who now needs a lovely home.

He’s timid when he first meets you but then very cuddly when he gets to know you and asks for loads of cuddles in true German Short-Haired Pointerstyle, he’s also great with kids. He is very sociable with other dogs, no problems there. He was in a foster home when recovering from his op and was very clean. He’s not in kennels while he waits for his home. He hasn’t been tested with cats.

Katai is a 7 year old neutered male German Shepherd looking for a very special home. It will be his first home as he has spent nearly 6 years in a shelter before coming into our rescue.

Katai is patient and understanding with other dogs and could live with others big or small. He could also love as an only dog though as all he is really interested in is all the love for himself.

He’s affectionate, loving, loyal and will follow you around. Katai doesn’t have the typical slanted back of many German Shepherd Dogs that causes hip problems and so is still very healthy and full of life at the age of 7.

Katai could live with children over the age of 10. He is currently in boarding in Hampshire but can be homed anywhere in England if the adopter is willing to travel.
