Senior Rescue Dog Diagnosed with Brain Tumor Fights for Her Life
After spending a lifetime in a puppy mill, Chloe was finally rescued. Tragedy struck again, however, when Julia Arney’s vet recommended she euthanize Chloe, her senior Maltese, due to a brain tumor. But Julia was determined to give her beloved pet a fresh start, and Chloe was ready to fight!
“Every day is a gift. We were supposed to lose her so long ago.”
In September 2017, Julia Arney’s vet recommended she euthanize her senior Maltese, Chloe. Julia was heartbroken – but she wasn’t ready to say goodbye or give up without a fight. “I wanted to exhaust every option and leave no stone unturned,” says Julia.
Adopting Chloe
A few years earlier, Julia was looking to bring a new dog into her family. She searched online and found one who caught her eye, but had “accidentally transposed the zip code, so instead of living North of Indy, where I live, the dog was in Colorado Springs!”
Despite the mixup and distance, Julia’s husband said, “go see her!” So she flew out west and got approved to adopt the pup. The foster family was out of town for a few days, so to fill the time, Julia volunteered at a local kennel. This is where she met Chloe… an older Maltese who was not the dog she had flown to Colorado to meet.
“It was an instant connection,” says Julia. “Chloe would make eye contact with me and bark if I walked by. The lady in charge of the kennel said she’d been there 11 months and had never barked. So I went to see her and that was it. She picked me.”
Julia called her husband and said, “honey, I’m in trouble.” He heard my voice and immediately told me to “bring ‘em both home.” But the airline would only let her travel with one dog, so she flew home with Peyton, the dog she’d originally gone out to adopt, and then turned right around at the airport and went back for Chloe. “I could not get back fast enough,” says Julia. “She stole my heart immediately.”
The sweet senior pup was the perfect fit for Julia’s family. She’d been rescued from a puppy mill where she’d lived for the first 9.5 years of her life, and had a lot of health issues – but it wasn’t too late for a fresh start. Having been raised in such terrible conditions, sweet, petite Chloe didn’t know what it was like to live as part of a family. “When we brought her home, there were a lot of things she didn’t know about, like sitting on someone’s lap for hours. But it sure didn’t take her long to adjust to the love! When she wants attention, she sure lets you know. She’s a snuggler now.”
Julia and her family were head-over-heels in love with Chloe – which made it all the more heartbreaking when the five-pound Maltese was diagnosed with a brain tumor.
The Diagnosis – and a Fresh Plan
When Julia’s vet recommended putting Chloe to sleep due to her illness and advanced age, Julia was devastated – and determined to find a solution to keep Chloe happy and healthy as long as possible.
After some research, she found a holistic vet who said, “if she’s a fighter, we will do everything we can.” This vet recommended herbs and medicine, treatments like acupuncture, massage therapy, and lasers, and a healthier diet. “She said that one-third of success is making sure you have her on the right food.”
Julia began researching the best options for healthy dog food. “I tried a couple other brands and I wasn’t happy. They said they were fresh but they often had freezer burn, and I thought: how long was this in a warehouse if it already has freezer burn?” And Chloe can be a picky eater, so it was hard to get her to take the herbs and medicine, even in food.
Then, a breakthrough: she discovered NomNomNow. She took the nutritional information to her vet, who was on board right away. “She said ‘that’s it. That’s the food you need to have her on.’” Julia immediately switched Chloe’s diet to NomNomNow, and she took to it right away, even with the herbal holistic medicine added. To serve it, Julia says, “I warm it up lightly. It smells like food, it looks like food, it is real food.”
NomNomNow’s fresh, healthy meals – along with the vet-recommended herbal holistic medicine and treatments – have made a world of difference in Chloe’s health. Her coat is shinier, her eyes are brighter, and her health is vastly improved.
“Here we are 14 months later. I know we are on borrowed time, but every day with Chloe is a gift. I’ve had some health issues myself and been in the hospital, and she’s what got me through.”
Julia now has two dogs eating NomNomNow and says “it’s worth its weight in gold. I feel so much better about what I’m giving them. I know that it’s part of our success in treating Chloe. I try to really tell everyone – fresh food might not always be the cheapest, but consider what you’re feeding them. If your animals are your family, and you knew what was in regular dog food, you really wouldn’t feed that to family. We’re so careful about what we put in our bodies, but people don’t realize that most dog food has a lot of stuff that is horrible.”
“We have to do better for our pets. We wonder why our animals don’t live as long as they used to, but yet we feed them stuff that is just not good for them.”
Chloe’s Impact
Chloe is now 15, and her life has had a big impact – not just on Julia, but on the world. Julia was forever changed by learning about Chloe’s puppy mill experience, and has dedicated her life to education and fundraising on the topic. Since being adopted, Chloe has not only overcome health issues, but has also helped raise tens of thousands of dollars toward puppy mill awareness.
“Even after all of those years being harmed, used, neglected at the hands of humans, the way she can forgive is incredible,” says Julia. “She shows everyone she meets nothing but love. We did a fundraiser with Harley Davidson and even these big, burly guys loved her. I remember people saying things to me about having a ‘heart dog’ that changes you forever. I had always loved all my dogs… well, I get it now. I love all my dogs tremendously. But this one. She’s the one.”
Julia believes Chloe wouldn’t be here today to share her story if it weren’t for NomNomNow. “We are so appreciative for the quality of food. It’s fresh and it’s SO healthy. We are thankful to all of you. Everyone is so responsive and helpful. You walk the walk, and it shows.”

Physical Exercise
Walking your dog every day is a great way to help your dog stay fit & active. And one of the easiest ways to keep your dog fit is by walking them every day. Walking helps preserve your dog’s muscles and joints, and it’s a great way to help shed some extra pounds if your dog is overweight. The daily walk is the one time a day your dog has a chance to go out and explore the neighborhood. And since dogs explore with their nose don’t forget to give them a chance to use it. When you’re out on your walk give them some time to sniff around for some extra mental stimulation and enrichment. I always set aside a few designated “sniff breaks” for Laika on our walks. I give her the cue “go sniff” and let her do her thing. When it’s time to head back I use the “let’s go” cue and we’re back on the trail.
To keep your dog walks fun remember to switch up your routine once in a while by going to a different neighborhood or checking out a new park or trail. Once a week I like to take Laika to a local park or trail to explore; it helps keep things exciting for the both of us.

Boosts Confidence
Another reason to walk your dog every day is that it’s a great for confidence. Having a daily routine will help boost your dog’s confidence, and your daily walk is a big part of that structure. One of the best ways to keep your dog happy and confident is by creating a daily routine for your dog that includes fun activities such as the daily walk and interactive play.

Lionel – 2 year old male Cross-Breed
Lionel is a 2 year old male Cross-Breed. This beautiful boy was found with severe gangrene in his leg. Unfortunately his leg couldn’t be saved and was amputated. Lionel is a lovely sweet and gentle lad but he is worried by being in the company of lots of other dogs so cant go to the shelter. He is currently in foster but we need to move him soon.
Lionel has no issues with humans and really enjoys company. He desperately needs an adopter who is calm and gentle and will see passed his disability. Having 3 legs doesn’t effect on Lionel and he is a normal dog in every other way. Lionel would like a garden and could happily live with other dogs as long as they are kind and gentle to him. We really need to get Lionel a home.
Current location is in Romania but can travel to the UK (once he/she has a home to go to) through the UK Charity under contract. Vaccinated, wormed, flea treated, Neutered (if old enough), Microchipped, Pet Passport.

Poppy and Rose – 9-10 year old female Chihuahuas
Poppy and Rose are 9-10 year old female Chihuahuas. Who wants to warm their hearts and home with a senior Chihuahua pair. This bonded little duo need a home to call their own. They are utterly adorable little Chihuahua girls who are 9 and 10 years young. Don’t let their ages put you off, these girls are spritely Healthy spring chickens.
Poppy and Rosie are tiny little ladies who are great with other dogs (although Poppy the black one is a little more defensive around bigger dogs) they have lived with cats too and are incredibly affectionate with people. They love nothing more than being on your lap; these two girls would be great company for an older couple or be a welcome addition to a family.
They’ve been in rescue far too long now and it’s sad because they have so very much to offer. Poppy and Rosie are housebroken and crate trained, non destructive in the home and fine to be left for small durations of time. They love their walks and need a sofa to cuddle up on in the evening.
Both girls are neutered, vaccinated and microchipped and will be subject to a home check and adoption donation. They will come with 4 weeks free insurance and a voucher for a box of free food.

Groot is a very handsome 18 month old Chihuahua cross Pug. This little lad has come into rescue due to not being able to cope with his owners busy home based business. Groot unfortunately is incredibly undersocialised with new people and is very fearful and vocal when confronted with strangers, he isn’t aggressive but does lunge and bark. He is fantastic with people he knows and is incredibly affectionate and covers you in kisses.
Groot enjoys his walks but doesn’t have a recall so will need further work on that in his new home. He knows basic commands and is housebroken and crate trained, he’s non destructive in the home. Groot is fantastic with other dogs but untested with cats.
Potential adopters will need to be prepared to work on Groot with his stranger phobia and give him the time and patience to deal with this on terms. He is neutered, vaccinated and Microchipped and will be subject to a home check and adoption donation. He will also come with 4 weeks free insurance and a voucher for a box of free food.

Hi, I’m Yoshi. I’m a 4 year old Japanese Chin cross Chihuahua and I’m guaranteed to make you laugh with my fabulous facial expressions! I’m a cheeky, mischievous chap with bags of character and a lot of love to give. Initially I’m quite shy and nervous, especially with men, so several visits to the Centre and home visits will help me to gain confidence and get to know you.
Someone who has rescue or nervous dog experience would be ideal as it will be a big adjustment to settle into a new home and I’ll need to build up time being left alone. I’m a smart little lad who wants to please and I’ll love learning new tricks! I can’t live with children but could possibly live with another dog and dog-savvy cat.

Toby – 8 month old male Spaniel Cross
Are you an experienced Spaniel owner? Do you have an active lifestyle with lots of time to invest in your dog? Then Toby may be a perfect new member of your family!
Toby is a very active Spaniel Cross who is looking for his forever family. He is just 8 months old and will need his owner to give him plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. An ideal home for him would be one that will incorporate Toby into their hobbies such as agility, flyball or similar. Initially Toby can be a bit shy with new people but as soon as he has had a good sniff, he will be your best bud! We feel Toby would do well in a home with older children who can enjoy training him.
Toby has been great meeting other dogs here at the centre, albeit a little shy at first, he can’t resist enticing them to play therefore Toby could live with another dog with matching energy levels!

Alba – 2 year old female Labrador Cross
Alba is a beautiful girl and is a Labrador Cross. She is just under 2 years old. Alba is a beautiful girl with a white coat and with big beautiful eyes. Alba has been on the scales and weighs in at 12kg. She has lost weight since having regular walks and charging around with her foster brother. We think she is a Labrador cross although she is much smaller in girth and stature. Alba and her foster brother Valli are now good friends. She is now very friendly towards her foster Mum, and has now come round let the men in the house pet her. Alba is in a foster home in Gloucestershire.
Alba has come on leaps and bounds in the last 10 days, and is now happily walking on a lead, and loving her walks. She is fine with cars, but doesn’t like horses much! Although Alba is a little timid she is a very loving girl who is ready and waiting for her golden forever basket. She will make someone a perfect companion.
We are looking for an adopter who has owned dogs before, as Alba needs to be brought out of her shell. She would be better in an adult only home, maybe an older couple who have plenty of time to give her and help her in new situations. She cannot be tested with cats, so we won’t rehome her in a home with cats. She is now house trained.
Alba was saved by our rescuer from the street as a young puppy. She was spotted hanging around a kindergarten and the rescuer who is a teacher there kept seeing her so saved her from being caught by the dog catchers, or run over by a car. Alba is now neutered, vaccinated, has a passport and is chipped and parasite treated.

Etta – 8 month old female Hound Cross
Meet Etta, an 8 month old female Hound Cross that was saved and brought over from Greece. Etta is a lovely dog, however she is looking for a home in a rural location with direct access to a garden, as she’s still a young pup with lots of energy.
Etta would also suit an owner who is around most of the time and is able to do a little more training with her. Etta could possibly live with another calm male dog, and chldren over the age of ten years (no cats, please).

Hugo – 11 month old male Jack Russell Terrier cross Chihuahua
Hugo is an 11 month old Jack Russell cross Chihuahua, full of all things terrier! Full of character who will bring bags of fun and memories to his new family. Hugo was found as a stray and left unclaimed before coming to us. Hugo is in a multi dog foster home and also sharing with two cats, he is inquisitive but no malice, so could live with dog savvy cat. Hugo can be left for a reasonable amount of time without issues although we do recommend him to be crated whilst alone as he can be destructive, however this behaviour is lessening over time as his stimulation is being increased.
Hugo loves his walks and is eager to meet anyone that he bumps into. House training is ongoing but he’s much improved since arrival and neutering! Due to still being a little puppy mouthing we would recommend a home where children are 10+ Hugo would benefit from being homed with a balanced dog so he can continue his playing and learning but not essential.

Waffle – 7 year old male Labrador Cross
Waffle is a handsome seven year old Labrador cross who has spent far too long in kennels. He is full of life and quite bouncy but does need some work on socialising with other dogs. Waffle will need to be the only dog in the home and cannot live with cats. This boy loves his walks and deserves a home of his own.

Alfie – 5-6 year old male Cross-Breed
This is our lovely little boy Alfie. Alfie is 5 to 6 years old, rescued from the streets of Romania. He is a very sociable dog roughly the size of a Corgi. He gets on very well with people, dogs and cats alike. Alfie is well behaved and undemanding but laps affection at every opportunity. He walks okay on his lead and enjoys going out and about for a walk and to explore the world.
Alfie will fit in any family as he is laid back and friendly. However due to the fact that we do not have a full history of him, it will be best not to place him where there are young children although supervised visitors would be fine.
Alfie is a very sweet natured, loving and affectionate boy who is looking to find a loving home who will love and spoil him and make him part of your life. He only deserves the best now and would like someone who wanting to find a brilliant companion and faithful friend.
Alfie is neutered, vaccinated and micro-chipped. Alfie is fostered in North London. For home checking purpose we favour applications from prospective adopters who reside in London or neighbouring counties, although we may consider enquiries from further afield for the right home.
