Anxiety can be one of the hardest things to deal with as a dog, and it can make it difficult to get through things like car rides, storms, and even just being alone. No dog or pet parent should have to deal with this kind of stress or worry in a day.

In this article I will be covering information about anxiety, CBD, and how to calm your anxious canine by utilizing CBD oil for anxiety in dogs.
Anxiety in Dogs
Anxiety can come in many shapes and sizes and is a natural emotion for both dogs and humans, but this does not mean we need to experience anxiety on an ongoing basis. There are many forms of anxiety, and even more ways to treat this anxiety based on the needs of your dog. Some of the things that trigger anxiety in dogs include thunderstorms, fireworks, strangers, a new home, loss of a loved one, car rides, being home alone, large crowds, and even mirrors.
All dogs are different and this means each one has their own likes and dislikes, including what causes them anxiety. There are common ones that I have already listed but this does not mean your pooch isn't anxious about something else. Some dogs are even afraid of little kids, which makes halloween a nightmare.
A more serious form of anxiety is referred to as separation anxiety and can lead to some destructive behaviors in your dog. Separation anxiety forms in dogs from a fear of their companion leaving them and not returning. This can lead to behaviors like chewing, barking, escaping, and aggression all while you are away and unable to prevent them.
Luckily there are some symptoms of anxiety that we can observe through a dog’s behaviors. Some of the common signs include scratching at doors, licking of the lips, increased grooming, whining, panting, shaking, pacing, and uncontrolled urination. It is important to keep track of your dog's behavioral patterns during high stress times like storms and before you leave the house to make sure they are not feeling any kind of anxiety. This is an important step in calming an anxious dog.
CBD Oil for Dogs
CBD is increasing in popularity by the day, but what is it?
CBD or cannabidiolis is a compound derived from the hemp plant that is referred to as a cannabinoid. There are other cannabinoids but CBD is special due to the medical benefits it holds. Some of these benefits include helping reduce arthritis, reducing pain and inflammation, reducing the severity and susceptibility of seizures, reducing anxiety, helping with blood disorders, and even being able to reduce the growth of cancer cells.
Many of the benefits of CBD are also seen in medical marijuana and this is because marijuana contains this CBD compound. But unlike marijuana CBD contains no THC which is what gives you a ‘high’. This is why CBD oil for anxiety is an amazing breakthrough for dogs!
THC can be toxic to dogs in extreme amounts, but because CBD is non-psychoactive and contains less than .03% THC it is harmless to dogs. Now dogs can get some of the amazing benefits of medical marijuana without risking safety. This has lead to a better quality of life for many dogs, especially some of the older pooches. 
CBD interacts with the body through what is called the endocannabinoid system, which is a nervous system that every mammal is believed to have. CBD connects to receptors found in the endocannabinoid system and travel throughout the body helping whenever need be, including parts of the body like the brain, spine, and heart.
Now that I have covered what it is let's look at how CBD for dogs anxiety actually works.
How to Calm Your Anxious Dog by Utilizing CBD Oil for Anxiety
Anxiety is caused by some sort of fear or worry, and when you introduce CBD into the body it immediately goes to work trying to help these emotions. The way it does this is through chemical reactions in the brain.
Serotonin is a chemical that the brain releases when in a state of comfort or calming. It is often presented during events like hugging, cuddling, and relaxing in a blanket. All of these activities sound amazing and this is because the serotonin makes you feel good in these situations. Dogs also release this chemical into their body during comforting moments of being pet, held, and even fed.
When CBD for anxiety is introduced to the body the endocannabinoid receptors take this compound and deliver it to the brain. The brain then takes this and makes serotonin through a process that goes way over my head so I won't try to explain it. When this serotonin enters your dog’s system they then begin to stabilize and calm any anxiety that may be present.
Finding out how to calm an anxious dog is hard, and although CBD is an amazing compound and truly performs miracles on a daily basis, it may not be the correct action for every dog. There are ways to reverse train your dog to not be afraid or anxious of certain thing and situations. Dog Digs Up Woolly Mammoth Tooth Right In His Backyard
Kirk Lacewell from Whidbey Island, WA wasn’t surprised when his 8-month-old pup named Scout started digging in the yard. It’s typical behavior for an energetic yellow lab, but what wasn’t typical was what Scout dug up. In a shallow hole in the backyard, Scout pulled out what looked like a rock. He started carrying it around as a prized possession, and that’s when Lacewell realized things weren’t exactly as they seemed.
Never before interested in things like rocks or sticks, Scout seemed overly attached to the mystery item he pulled out of the ground. After two days of watching Scout tote around his treasure, Lacewell decided to take a closer look. He originally thought it was nothing more than a strangely shaped rock, or maybe a piece of petrified wood. As he washed away layers of dirt, mud, and dog slobber, however, he noticed something strange. Part of the mystery object looked like bone, and there was a worn covering that looked nothing like any wood or rock he had ever seen before. Somehow Scout knew he had found something special.
Wanting answers, Lacewell took pictures of his dog’s new chew toy and sent them to scientists at the University of Washington’s Burke Museum. When he heard back, all the paleontologists were in agreement. They told him Scout discovered part of a woolly mammoth tooth they believe to be around 13,000 years old. Woolly mammoths used to call that area of Washington home during the Ice Age, and apparently, they lived right in Lacewell’s backyard.
Scout’s discovery isn’t the first mammoth tooth or bone to be found on Whidby Island. The 22,000-pound mammals stood 13 feet high and survived off mostly grass. Their teeth were shaped for ripping and grinding their food, and scientists have found mammoth teeth are typically the most preserved parts of the animals found today. The specimen Scout found buried in the yard shows the outer enamel of the tooth worn in areas to expose the layers underneath.
Now that it’s out of Scout’s mouth, Lacewell plans to hold on to his dog’s buried treasure. He’s keeping the mammoth tooth out of Scout’s reach, but he still gives the dog credit for finding an impressive piece of history. Every time he looks into his backyard, he can now imagine what it looked like all those years ago. Who knows what Scout will dig up next.

Rhode Island Rescue Helps Woman With Cancer Care For Her Four Senior Dogs
When Linda was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, her world flipped upside down. She was forced to leave her home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida to move in with her sister in Rhode Island. It was a big change, and her difficult treatment and new home weren’t the only issues on her mind. There were four Chihuahuas, 16-year-old Scaredy, 14-year-old Brewsy, 14-year-old Suzy, and 14-year-old Runty who were depending on her. She knew life was about to change for them too, but she was determined to do everything she could for her beloved dogs.

Under the stress of chemo, Linda knew she wouldn’t be able to take care of her dogs in the way they deserved. Her health forced her hand, and Linda and her sister started looking at options. Linda knew the dogs couldn’t continue to live with her while she was sick, but she desperately wanted them to stay together. She knew average shelters would either euthanize the dogs due to their ages, or her precious pups would spend the rest of their lives in cages. Neither option was acceptable. Linda and her sister scoured the area for a miracle solution, and then they found Vintage Pet Rescue.
Established only last year, Vintage Pet Rescue is a retirement and hospice home for senior pets. Owners Kristen and Marc Peralta commit themselves to providing a loving home for all senior animals no matter their age or health. The dogs in their care aren’t up for adoption, and instead, Vintage Pet Rescue gives them healthy meals, exercise, love, attention, and veterinary care. They have a home for life, and each dog is loved and well cared for.

Vintage Pet Rescue turned into exactly what Linda was looking for. She contacted Kristen Peralta asking for help, and Peralta didn’t hesitate to say, “Yes!” Not only did Peralta welcome all four of Linda’s dogs into the Vintage Pet Rescue family, she also made a special arrangement. While most of the dogs that come to Vintage Pet Rescue will spend the rest of their lives with Peralta, Scaredy, Brewsy, Suzy, and Runty are still very much Linda’s dogs. In fact, the oldest dog, Scaredy, is already back living with Linda and helping her get through chemo. The other three live cage-free under Peralta’s attentive care with the hope Linda will soon be healthy enough to welcome them back.
As part of the Vintage Pet Rescue pack of seniors, Linda’s Chihuahuas are comfortable and well taken care of. They spend their days in plush dog beds instead of shelter kennels, and they receive individualized attention and love. When Scaredy got sick and Linda thought she would lose him, Peralta stepped up to pay for life-saving surgery. It didn’t matter that the dog was already back with Linda at this point, Peralta did everything she could to save his life.

When Linda is feeling well enough, she visits Brewsy, Suzy, and Runty in their new home. The little dogs are always excited to see her, and the rest of the Vintage Pet Rescue pack also join in on the fun. Linda always has a herd of senior dogs around her, and she can see first-hand how her dogs are thriving. While Peralta has several other dogs under her care, she makes sure Linda has regular opportunities to see her pups. She arranges meetings, and when Linda is too ill to visit, they talk on the phone so Linda is always updated on what’s happening in her dogs’ lives. Linda told PEOPLE,
“I would safely say she [Peralta] helps save my life a little every day with my dogs and all the rest, too. There are no words to describe her kindness and her amazing ability to take care of them all and love them all.”

Adam is a smaller cross-breed boy who is 2 years old (born February 2016). We rescued Adam from an awful public shelter a few months ago. We think he was a pet before he was captured as he is so friendly with humans.

Liza – 6 year old female Cross-Breed
This beautiful girl is Liza, she is a small-medium sized cross-breed girl aged 6 years old (born in February 2012) who ended up in the public shelter. A gentler girl, she never could cope, so our rescuer took her into her home where she lived with cats in foster.
Now in the UK, in the West Midlands area, Liza is loving human cuddles. She would like a medium active or quieter home so that she can enjoy the life she never could have in Romania.

Rollo – 5 year old male Cross-Breed
This poor boy is Rollo, he is around 5 years old, he was abandoned in the public shelter. Imagine being a family pet, with at least a family of sorts, food every day and a home. The next day being taken to the public shelter and dumped.
He just couldn’t cope with the noise, the other dogs all barking and he was petrified. He is now in foster in NW London.
He loves people, but does need an experienced home that is not too busy: he can bark when people come into the home, and he needs to be trained to learn that he is safe now. Rollo is living with older children and another dog in a family home, but would prefer a quieter environment than London.

Meet Liza, an approximately 2 to 3 year-old female cross-breed who came to us from the streets of Egypt. This beautiful pup has had the toughest start in life; she was hit by a car, which damaged her spine and back legs and left her partially paralysed.
Liza is currently with a foster family and is receiving treatment for the pressure sores on her feet and hydrotherapy to help with the muscle wastage in her legs – she’s responding really well and can walk as well! Liza would need direct access to a garden and no stairs. She could live with another dog, but no cats please.

Ozzy – 1 year old male French Bulldog
Adorable Ozzy is a 1 year old blue brindle French Bulldog who is looking for a new home following a relationship breakdown. He is currently being cared for by a relative, however the other dog in the home is quite nervous and finds Ozzy a bit too much so he is on our waiting list waiting to come into rescue.
Ozzy is a fantastic boy, he can be a little unsure at first and may bark but as soon as you introduce yourself he is a very friendly boy who loves to play. As he is only young he will need a home with someone around for most/all of the day, who can provide him with plenty of exercise and stimulation. We feel he could live with sensible children over the age of 10.
Ozzy has previously lived with a cat, however we are unsure if he could live with a cat in his new home. We feel that he has the potential to live with another dog, however the other dog in the home would need to be of a similar age/temperament as he is quite playful.

AJ – 2 year old male Rottweiler
Meet AJ, a 2 year old male Rottweiler.
AJ came to us after his owner has had a change of circumstances. He has just come into ADM, and therefore we are still assessing him.
He seems to be getting on well with other dogs and people, so could possibly live with a calm female dog. AJ could live with children over the age of ten years, but no cats please.
We are looking for someone who has experience with Rottweilers or B breeds. AJ will need a home with direct access to a garden.

Otto – 1-2 year old male Ratonero Bodeguero (Spanish Jack Russell)
Hi, my name is Otto and I’m looking for my happy ever after for Christmas. I know I can’t travel until January but if I get my family and they reserve me it will give me the best Christmas ever. I’m just a young lad – appx 1-2 and I was found wandering in Benidorm and taken to a city shelter. My rescue group in UK work closely to help many Benidorm dogs.
I’m a Bodeguero which is similar to Jack Russell or Patterdale. My full title is Ratonero Bodeguero, we are friendly and loving little dogs and we get on well with children. We like to play and I love my ball. We are loving and loyal but don’t too much enjoy having small furries in the home.
I’m presently locked up however once I get an offer of a new home I can be moved into foster care to get all my vet work done and my transport to UK booked.
I will be neutered, vaccinated, blood tested, chipped and have my passport with all vet work documented.
I will travel to UK in DEFRA approved air-conditioned transport. For the most part, I can be delivered directly to your door depending on where you live. My rescue group provides full rescue back up for support pre and post-adoption.
To keep me safe you will need to complete an adoption questionnaire, have a Homecheck and pay part of my rescue fees. I’m so, so, so looking forward to a time when I have my own home. Please don’t make me wait – I’ll be your best boy and you can help me to be the best dog I can be.

Cuify – 6 year old female Lhasa Apso Cross
Meet Grumpy Grandpa Cuify. Cuify is a 6 year old Lhasa Apso cross.
Cuify (pronounced Choofy) has had a very sad life. He was found on the streets in Romania, he was probably malnourished and has some deformity in his front legs, but it doesn’t stop him getting about. Cuify came to the UK several years ago and was adopted by a wonderful lady who tragically died suddenly, leaving her beloved dogs behind leaving him homeless again.
Cuify was a very scared confused dog and quite unpredictable when he first arrived and would bite if scared or in pain. He has progressed very well but will still need to be handled carefully.
Once you understand his quirks he really is no bother, however he MUST be muzzled on walks, being groomed or if visitors come to the home.
He loves a routine and enjoys his walks. He goes to daycare at kennels whilst in foster which he loves as he can bark and boss about the other dogs there. He enjoys it so much he waits by the door crying until it’s time to leave. He adores car trips and looking out of the window.
He is reactive with other dogs out and about but he is used to living in a multi-dog household. He would prefer calm, non dominant dogs or to be an only dog. He has lived with cats and birds also. He loves walks but sometimes his little legs get stiff so he won’t need long walks, just a potter down the road would be fine.
He loves to cuddle and sleep in bed with you if you will let him. He does not like being left and would like to be with his owner most of the time. He is neutered chipped and vaccinated. He occasionally needs painkillers for his legs. Provided his owner can manage his reactiveness on the leash and doesn’t put him in situations that make him uncomfortable he would make a lovely companion dog for someone a bit older and retired who possible doesn’t want to do long walks. His adoption fee is reduced to £150.
