Creating the Perfect Garden for You and Your Dog

As gardening season begins, you may have many questions when it comes to planting a dog-friendly garden: What plants are poisonous to my dog? What plants are healthy for my dog?  What mulches/fertilizers/pesticides are safe for my dog? What does a dog-friendly garden look like?

This article will serve as your guide to creating the perfect garden not only for your backyard, but also for your furry four-legged friend.

Items in Your Garden

Plants:

The first step in creating a garden is selecting what to grow. There are lots of plants out there that will add color and vibrancy to your garden, but some might be harmful to your dog.

The ASPCA offers an extensive list of plants both toxic and non-toxic for pets. However, here is a short list of plants poisonous to your dog:

• Carnations
• Daffodil
• Apple
• Mint
• Lilies
• Begonia
• Daisies
• Chives
• Spring parsley*
• Gardenia
• Lavender
• Leek
• Peony
• Tulip
• Oregano
• Rhubarb
• Tomato

These are plants to avoid, as they can cause vomiting, kidney failure, tremors, diarrhea, low blood pressure, and more in your dog.

There are also lots of plants safe, and even healthy, for your dog to eat:

• Raw green beans
• Berries
• Rosemary
• Basil
• Curly-leafed parsley*
• Barley grasses
• Thyme

These plants contain antioxidants, vitamins, and other chemicals that are very good for your dog, and are safe for them to consume straight from the plant or cooked into their favorite bowl of kibble.

Other, more general plants to avoid are those that are spiny and thorny, as these can not only be dangerous for your dog if ingested but can cause injuries.

*Spring parsley is toxic to dogs; curly-leafed parsley is used in dog products and is safe for dog consumption.

Garden Extras

While flowers, herbs, vegetables, and other plants are essential for any garden, there are other ingredients in any garden that make it a recipe for success. These include fertilizer, pesticides, and mulch.

Pesticides

Pesticides to avoid: Any pesticides that include organophosphates are deadly, and can attack the central nervous system of your dog.

Snail and slug baits that contain metaldehyde will kill dogs that eat it.

Pesticides mixed with fertilizers can also be dangerous: these pesticides can contain fish and bone meal, which smell appetizing to your dog but will result in unpleasant consequences.

Pesticides to use: Essential oils are safe to use around dogs, but also have pest-controlling properties. Lavender can ward off ants; lemon eucalyptus and pine mosquitos; and tea tree Australia can kill fleas, ticks, and other parasites.

Boric acid is also safe around dogs, while also destroying weeds, pests, mold, and fungi.

Food-grade diatomaceous earth (DE) is also a safe and effective way to eliminate pests in your garden, while also keeping your dog safe. DE helps to get rid of all types of pests, including beetles, flies, ants, and slugs. In fact, DE can also be used to control pests on your dog! Diatomaceous earth is a powder that will need to be replaced after each rainfall, but it’s plentiful uses make it a safe and effective tool for gardening.

Fertilizers

Fertilizers to avoid: Fertilizers that use fish emulsion, bone meal, or blood meal won’t be dangerous for your dog, but they may be dangerous for your garden. Fish emulsion fertilizers are literally made of fish, meaning it may smell appealing to your dog and they might dig up your perfectly placed garden plants.

More seriously, any fertilizers that contain carbamates and organophosphates are especially dangerous for your dog. Luckily, the EPA has cracked down on the usage of these ingredients in fertilizers. Still, to be safe, read the labels of any fertilizers for these two ingredients.

Organic fertilizers may seem safe because of the label “organic.” However, these products often contain bone, blood, feather, and fish meal, which smell appetizing to dogs and can result in ingestion. This can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and other problems in your dog.

Fertilizers to use: Fertilizers using seaweed are great for your garden and safe for your dog. Same with grass clippings, compost, and manure.

Mulch

Mulch to avoid: Cocoa shell mulch should be avoided. Cocoa mulch contains theobromine, the chemical found in chocolate that is toxic to dogs. It also smells like chocolate, making it an appetizing snack for your dog out in the yard. It is rare for dogs to get severely sick from eating cocoa shell mulch, but it is still a possibility.

Using rocks as an alternative for mulch is also not recommended. Dogs may like to chew or eat rocks, which can cause them to choke or can cause more serious obstructions. Rock mulches may also hurt your dog’s feet.

Mulch to use: Mulch made of cedar, pine, and hemlock are safe for your dogs and for your garden. Although there are some concerns when it comes to certain chemicals within the mulch, rubber mulch is also safe for dogs.

Alternatives to mulch that work the same include leaves and pine needles, which are safe for dogs and also safe for your wallet.

Other things to be worried about when it comes to mulches is, if your dog eats mulch, it could lead to obstruction in their digestive system and even puncture. This can cause long-term pain and sickness in your dog. Dogs can also be allergic to certain kinds of mulch. If you fear your dog may have eaten mulch, or is allergic to mulch, contact your veterinarian.

Building a Dog-Friendly Garden

Other ways to improve your garden and improve the life of your dog are:

Giving your dog plenty of green space to safely explore, while also letting them run around and do their business.

Raising your garden beds. This will keep your dog out of the planters, but will also allow you to plant a greater variety of flowers or plants that may not be safe for your dog.

Create borders around areas you don’t want your dog to get into. These could include raised edges around your garden or planting area, as a warning against entry to your dog. Or they could be more serious, fence-like structures. Either way, these could discourage your dog from venturing into areas that may be dangerous.

Have an area for your dog to lay down and relax. This could be a tree or shrub that provides shade, a shallow pool for dipping their tongues or feet into, or just a place for them to sit and observe the goings-on in their neighborhood.

Dog Abandoned & Written On With Permanent Marker Finally Has Hope For A Better Life

Just when we think we’ve seen it all, another unbelievable rescue story emerges.

Marvella is a pup who was found dumped in a park in Ohio. Although her former owners supposedly wanted her to go to a good home, their actions spoke otherwise.

The message was written on the young white dog in black permanent marker. Across her side it said “FREE,” and on her forehead, “GOOD HOME ONLY.”

Her other side, in very sloppy writing, appears to read, “I AM A GIFT FROM GOD.”

…so why was she drawn on and abandoned?

Luckily, the rest of Marvella’s story is much happier! She’s currently at the Ross County Humane Society in Chillicothe, Ohio, where she was given a bath, “and spent the day in the office with the shelter staff getting lots of treats and attention,” according to the humane society’s Facebook page.

Unsurprisingly, this sweet girl’s story went viral, and the rescue has already been flooded with applications! Without a doubt, Marvella will find her real forever home — one that keeps that beautiful coat clean and treasures her as the gift she really is.

Clyde Lucky Lola Rex and Rumba are 3 month old male and female Cross-Breeds. They are currently in Cyprus and really hoping to find their forever homes in the U.K. Their mum is a gentle, medium sized, crossbreed and a photo of her is attached. She has 5 puppies still hoping to find homes.

Cyprus is at the moment struggling to cope with the number of abandoned puppies. Our rescue is trying to save as many as we can so that they can live fulfilled lives as family pets as all puppies deserve. They will be able to fly to the UK when they reach 15 weeks old. They have adorable round puppy tummies, soft fur, are playful, loving and just simply delicious.

Whilst we don’t know exactly what breeds they comprise of, we think they will be a medium size when grown. They are all super, cute, friendly pups. Just like any puppy they are inquisitive and boisterous. They will require support, guidance and training to help them develop into the adult dogs you want them to be. They are lucky to have been rescued and are already learning manners and what cuddles are all about.

We hope to find a family for each of them, who will open their heart and home to allow them to grow into the wonderful family pets they have the potential to be. They would do well with another dog in the household to help them learn the ropes or as an only dog providing you can devote time to support them.

We would always recommend any dog or puppy should be fully supervised if with children. They will be vaccinated. Prior to their flights to the UK they will receive the vet preparation required, be microchipped and have their entry passports prepared.

The adoption donation required to help cover the flight and related costs to get one of the puppies to you in the UK will be a donation in the region of £400 to £425 depending on where you are in the country and the exchange rates.

Cleo – 2 year old female Cross-Breed

Cleo is a 2 year old female Cross-Breed. Pretty Cleo is sadly looking for a new home as she is not getting along with the other 2 dogs in the home. Cleo was fine with the other dogs until she was neutered and then she started to try and dominate them which is now causing conflict. Her owner feels that she would be much happier in a home without other dogs with someone who can dedicate more time to her.

Cleo is generally okay with dogs on walks but does prefer her own space and will growl if they approach her. We are told that Cleo is okay with submissive dogs that she has been introduced to and can possibly share walks with them. However she will need a dog savvy owner who will be sensible and take care on walks. She has never been around cats.

Cleo is such a sweet girl, she adores people and is very affectionate. She has always lived with young children and has been described as gentle around them. She is clean and non-destructive in the home but as she is only young we are looking for a home with someone around for most of the day.

We feel that Cleo has some Collie in her breeding and will require an active home with plenty of walks and stimulation. She is a medium (Labrador) sized dog. This girl is a real star and would make a fantastic addition to the family.

Pip – 3 year old female Terrier Cross

Pip is a 3 year old Terrier cross and is fostered in Norfolk with other dogs. She has met cats and been absolutely fine with them and she has enjoyed being stroked by children she has met too. She loves playing with toys.

Her foster mum goes on weekend camper van trips which Pip has joined too and enjoyed. She’s a small – medium size and is looking for her perfect forever home.

Milly – 10 month old female Bearded Collie Cross

Milly 10 month old is possibly Bearded Collie, Pointer cross Beagle being fostered in Gloucestershire. This lovely girl started her life in Surrey brought as a puppy for a family – I think having got to know Milly and the state of the blanket she came with that stunk of wee,dirty collar and was so dirty she has been badly neglected, very shut down and quiet for such a young dog we do not know what has happened, they sold her on the free ads to the first family that would give them £100 and then this family realised when they went to see her that is was a mistake with 4 children and a young Collie but did not want to leave her so they took her – that is how she came into rescue.

She is too quiet at the moment but has been around a lot of different dogs and is very good with them I think as we have a couple of young dogs in at that moment she was a bit overwhelmed plus it was another move in the same week, she has gone into a quieter foster home with two small dogs and is doing fine. She appears to be house trained, quiet and settles well at night. She is very sweet and loving once she knows you but can be a bit frightened to begin with – her foster home has taken it very slow with her but we feel she has been pulled around and possibly hit. She also had marks on her face.

When she is fed with the other dogs she can be quite guardy so is fed separately, playing with toys etc she is not possessive at all but can get a bit funny over sticks. I think this gentle dogs just needs a kind experienced home she is still really only a baby and needs consistently and training – I think has she progressive with us she will improve and we will see a different Milly has the days go on.

I think a dog like Milly would probably benefit from an experienced home with or without another dog, someone who has had an abused or neglected dog, she has a lot of good qualities including how she is with lots of new dogs, she just need that experienced hand to guide her through to adulthood.

We are hoping as she progresses we can change this profile but this is where we are abouts at the moment.

Tiny – 4 year old female Cross-Breed

Tiny is a small sized 4 years old female Cross-Breed. This cutie is Tiny, just like the name she is tiny in size! This bundle of fun is actually shy at first, she just wants to be loved but she is wary to accept straight away, but once she warms to you and learns to trust this tiny girl will become your best friend.

Tiny is 4 years old and she gets on great with other dogs. Tiny is in foster in the Crawley area where she is thriving and each day is gaining confidence, Tiny would love to live with another dog who she could play with.

Tiny adores playing with toys and will empty a toy box and play by herself or with her foster sisters.

Bert – 8 month old male Cross-Breed

Bert is a medium to large sized 8 month old Cross-Breed puppy. Bert was found along with his siblings in the freezing cold, after suffering from a skin condition they had almost no fur on their bodies.

Luckily their loving rescuer found them, or they would have surely frozen to death. Nursed back to health and given daily baths these pups are super happy and are all in good health.

Bert and his siblings are 8 months old and they will be medium in size when fully grown. Bert is a happy, playful pup. He gets on well with other dogs and he loves to cuddle.
