Gender pension gap: how women can boost their retirement pot

Gender pension gap: how women can boost their retirement pot:

Women on average retire with less than half the income of men. We talk to three women keen to buck the trend and give six top tips

Women are still facing retirement with substantially less saved in their pensions than men. Low pay is a major contributing factor to the gender pension gap as women often take part-time positions or become self-employed to manage family commitments.

On average, women earn about 16% less than men, according to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics.

Action station: walking the Cotswolds from our village base

Action station: walking the Cotswolds from our village base:

Walkers are Welcome is a network of towns and villages that make excellent holiday hubs. Winchcombe, with ‘an appealing amount of Cotswoldiness’ is a perfect example

On a sunny day, on a hike in the Cotswold foothills, we stumble upon walking royalty. In the graveyard of Dumbleton’s Norman church, there he is: Patrick Leigh Fermor. A man who, in the 1930s, strode from Holland to the Bosphorus. Scanning his headstone’s Greek inscription in the oh-so-English countryside, we’re awed, humbled, envious. Though also aware that you don’t have to trek quite that far for a satisfying journey.

On our own five-day, car-free trip to Gloucestershire, my partner and I have walked almost 100 miles – and gotten nowhere. But we’ve found, among other things, a neolithic tomb, a wife of Henry VIII, a lot of birds and, now, a travel writing legend.

Lab-grown dairy is the future of milk, researchers say

Lab-grown dairy is the future of milk, researchers say:

Startups are joining the race to create first imitation cow’s milk by artificially reproducing proteins in curds and whey

For decades, people on plant-based diets were restricted to soya-based options to recreate dairy, until veganism went mainstream and a clutch of palate-pleasing almond, coconut and oat-based alternatives emerged. Last week, Swedish scientists launched a potato milk, equally lauded for its sustainability credentials and criticised for deriving from a humdrum carbohydrate. The holy grail now – according to researchers – is genuine dairy milk, made in a lab.

A growing number of startups from Silicon Valley to Singapore are rapidly joining the race to create the first imitation cow’s milk, based on artificially reproducing the proteins in curds (casein) and whey, that is suitable for mass market consumption.

Scientists say it will recreate dairy’s authentic mouthfeel and temperature resistance, and constitute the perfect texture for vegan cheese, capable of melting just like the real thing.

Team GB win bronze in men’s eight as inquest starts into poor Olympic regatta

Team GB win bronze in men’s eight as inquest starts into poor Olympic regatta:
  • New Zealand win gold in final rowing event of Games
  • ‘British team haven’t performed,’ says Sir Matthew Pinsent

Great Britain’s men’s eight produced a good performance to take bronze in the Olympic regatta’s final event as the inquest began over a disappointing medal return in Tokyo. The men’s eight were not considered to be realistic medal challengers but it proved a good display by Josh Bugajski, Jacob Dawson, Tom George, Mohamed Sbihi, Charles Elwes, Oliver Wynne-Griffith, James Rudkin and Tom Ford. They finished third behind the gold medallists from New Zealand, with Germany taking second.

It was Britain’s second medal of the regatta after a silver in the men’s quadruple sculls on Wednesday. The bronze medal ensured a positive end to a difficult Games for British Rowing. Earlier on Friday, Vicky Thornley agonisingly missed out on a medal in the women’s single sculls. It was Team GB’s fourth fourth-placed finish from six medal races at Sea Forest Waterway.

Revealed: £6bn NHS glove contract shows rocketing cost of PPE

Revealed: £6bn NHS glove contract shows rocketing cost of PPE:

Extraordinary sum reveals PPE cost pressures and raises fears of forced labour in overseas factories

The Department of Health and Social Care has set aside up to £6bn to spend on disposable gloves over the next two years, underlining the huge expense of continuing to supply the NHS with personal protective equipment.

The drive to secure PPE since the onset of the pandemic has led to rocketing prices, accusations of cronyism, and reports of forced labour being used to manufacture the products.

Away from it all: island hopping around Finland’s Turku archipelago

Away from it all: island hopping around Finland’s Turku archipelago:

With Finland now open to vaccinated travellers, the 20,000 pristine islands off its south-west coast make for an appealing post-pandemic tour

Finland has dealt with the pandemic much better than a lot of other countries. It still has one of the lowest rates of both confirmed cases (about 103,851 at time of writing) and coronavirus-related deaths (currently 982) in Europe, a feat many have attributed to a strategy of rapid lockdowns and stringent travel restrictions.

It did all this in typical Finnish style: without shouting about it. Perhaps this quiet demeanour is related to the country’s deep connection with the natural world, where shouting usually isn’t necessary. More than 90% of Finland is either forest or water, and the country’s jokamiehenoikeus (right to roam) gives anyone living in or visiting Finland access to all that nature, including a lot of privately owned land.

When shame kills: why do so many mothers in Senegal feel forced to murder their babies?

When shame kills: why do so many mothers in Senegal feel forced to murder their babies?:

Photographer Maroussia Mbaye spoke to women who said crushing social stigma, poverty and lack of traditional support systems had left them with no choice but to commit infanticide

Mbeubeuss is one of the biggest rubbish tips in Africa and Senegal’s largest open cemetery for murdered children. In the past three years, the bodies of 32 infants have been recovered from the site by the waste-pickers who work there.

Looking at the high rate of infanticide in Senegal, it seems the main reasons for it are shame about pregnancy outside marriage and a loss of traditional support for young women.

‘I have a scene to do, run!’: backstage at Minack Theatre

‘I have a scene to do, run!’: backstage at Minack Theatre:

Our photojournalist explores the famed outdoor venue in Cornwall as it welcomes back full houses

“I knew of it from pictures I’d seen online and I thought it looked pretty, but when you arrive and see it yourself, it’s like, ‘Oh wow, this is insane,’” says actor Guido Garcia Lueches about the Minack Theatre. “It’s probably the best theatre I’ve ever performed in.”

Carved largely by hand into a craggy, granite cliff-face, the dizzying outdoor venue on the south coast of Cornwall looks magnificent in the summer sunshine. Tiers of subtropical foliage splash colour throughout the landscape and weathered concrete seats bearing the titles of past shows rise abruptly from the stage. The ocean, 100ft below, looks an enticing shade of green.

Wonder – 3 year old male Cross-Breed

Wonder is a 3 year old male Cross-Breed. He is medium size, neutered male mix breed (Weight: 23 kg, Shoulder height: 49 cm). He was rescued from a horrific situation, the poor boy was tied to a chain so tight that his neck was bleeding.

He was skin and bones and in addition was totally blind. His eyelashes pointed inwards to his eyeballs, this is probably the reason he went blind (a condition called Entropium). He’d spent his life chained up from a puppy. He is now in a foster home and has turned out to be a lovely dog who’s looking for a family who understand his needs and provide him a loving home for the rest of his life.

Wonder is a very sweet boy who loves people and is super affectionate. He is quite an easy going boy with medium energy levels – he loves his walks followed by a lie around on the sofa and ideally resting his head in your lap. He plays with toys and happy to learn new skills.

Due to his blindness he can get scared of a sudden touch, loud noises or fast movements near him and he needs reassurance and a human to guide him. He is friendly and playful with dogs in general but due to his impaired vision he can get confused by crowds of dogs zooming around so his foster parents try to limit the number of dogs he plays with at any one time. In controlled situations he is happy and friendly.

Wonder walks nicely on the lead and quite oblivious of his surrounding as long as he is kept safe. He is housetrained and can be left alone for a few hours. He also understands English very well so anyone taking him on does not need to learn Hungarian.

Wonder would be best suited for a family without children where he is not left alone for long periods of time and he can be part of family life. He needs a family that understand his needs and is patient with him with new experiences. As all rescue dogs, he will need time, patience, love and commitment from his adopting family to become a happy, well balanced dog. Experience with rescue dogs essential. No first time owners please.

Wonder is currently in Hungary and can travel to the UK as soon as the right family is found for him. He comes fully vaccinated, neutered, microchipped, dewormed, flea and tick treated, with an EU passport and DEFRA approved paperwork.

Adoption is subject to Home Check and Adoption fee. Full RBU provided.

Lester – 2 year old male Cross-Breed

Lester is a 2 year old male Cross-Breed. He is small and neutered (weight: 9 kg, shoulder height: 40 cm). He came to the rescue from his ’family’ with very long nails and other signs of neglect so we suspect he’s never been looked after properly neither physically nor mentally. He now stays in a foster home in Hungary.

Lester is a real sweetheart, he is super cuddly and loves to be pampered. He is a cheeky boy who loves playing with his soft toys and balls and initiates a play with his fosterers. He loves interacting with his humans or just lying on the sofa next to them. He is toilet trained and can be left for a couple of hours without problem.

Due to the neglect he suffered and probably the lack of socialization, he is quite anxious when out and about and can get scared easily. He shows his anxiety by barking. He currently lives in a busy town which is far from being ideal for him.

Lester would be best suited for a family without children where he is not left alone for long periods of time and there is time for his training. He wants to be part of the family and get all the attention and care he deserves.

He would be happiest in a rural or semi-rural environment where he is not overwhelmed by busy traffic and crowds of people or dogs. He would probably be happiest living as the only dog in the household.

As all rescue dogs, he will need time, patience, love and commitment from his adopting family to become a happy dog. Experience with rescue dogs, especially with nervous or anxious dogs is desirable. No first time owners please.

Lester is currently in Hungary and can travel to the UK as soon as the right family is found for him. He comes neutered, fully vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, flea and tick treated, with an EU passport and DEFRA approved paperwork.

Guru – 3 year old male Cross-Breed

Guru is a 3 year old male Cross-Breed (shoulder height: 35 cm, weight: 12 kg). He is neutered and medium size (shoulder height: 35 cm, weight: 12 kg). He was taken over from a kill shelter and he’s spent the past 7 month in a crowded shelter totally undeserved. We want to find him a loving home so he can experience what it is like to be part of a family.

Guru was very shy and wary of people when he arrived at the shelter but he has changed a lot over time and he is now up for cuddles around humans. He is still timid when meeting new people and he will need time to settle and come out of his shell. He probably didn’t have a nice life before and he’ll need a gentle approach and patience when introducing him to his new home and environment.

He is good with dogs but he gets jealous when competing for human attention and can get nippy at times. He must have some Dachshund in him as he has a strong will when he wants something! He currently lives in a kennel environment outdoors and we are unsure about his toilet training needs. He does not walk on the lead and he will need to be introduced to on and off lead walks in his new home.

Guru would be best suited for a family without children where he is not left alone for long periods of time and there is time for his training. His new family will need to be patient and give him time to settle in his new home as this will be a very different world to the one he knows. He would probably be happiest as the only dog in the household, but he could potentially live with a calm and friendly dog. Experience with rescue dogs is strongly preferred. No first time owners please.

As all rescue dogs, he will need love, patience, time and commitment from his adopting family. Guru is currently in Hungary and can travel to the UK as soon as the right family’s found for him. He comes fully vaccinated, neutered, microchipped, dewormed, flea and tick treated, with an EU passport and DEFRA approved paperwork.

Chester – 8 year old male Cross-Breed

Chester is an 8 year old male Cross-Breed. He is a good medium size and neutered (shoulder height: 55 cm, weight: 28 kg). He was adopted as a puppy but was returned to the shelter due to his owner’s illness 5 years later. He’s spent the past 3 and a half years in a crowded shelter totally undeserved as he is a great dog with a nice temperament. We would like to find a loving home for him where he can live the life he deserves before getting old in a shelter that he shares with a couple of hundred other dogs.

Chester has a lovely nature, he loves his humans above all and would do anything to please you. He’s already learned to sit nicely to live up to his carers expectations. He is a sweet cuddly boy with a calm, peaceful temperament. We would like him to get all the cuddles and attention he’s been missing out on for way too long.

He is good with dogs and doesn’t seek trouble but lives peacefully among his shelter mates. Mostly, he’s not too interested in them. He prefers human company and he really deserves to be a treasured member of a family. He currently lives in a kennel environment outdoors and his future family will need to be prepared to house train him if needed. He is used to a lead but he is not taken on walks so he will need to be trained how to walk nicely on and off the lead as necessary.

Chester would be best suited with a family without children where he is not left alone for long periods of time and he can spend precious time with his family. A quiet and peaceful environment would probably be ideal for him where he can be part of family life and enjoy exercise outdoors and quiet times in a cosy home. He could live with another calm and friendly dog but he would be equally happy living with his humans to care for him only. Experience with rescue dogs is strongly preferred. No first time owners please.

As all rescue dogs, he will need love, patience, time and commitment from his adopting family. Chester is currently in Hungary and can travel to the UK as soon as the right family’s found for him. He comes fully vaccinated, neutered, microchipped, dewormed, flea and tick treated, with an EU passport and DEFRA approved paperwork.

Nika – 5 month old female Cross-Breed

Nika is a 5 month-old female Cross-Breed puppy (current weight: 6 kg). She was found in the street in rural Hungary full of lice, constantly scratching herself. She is expected to be a smaller medium size when fully grown.

She is a lovely playful girl who gets along with the other doggies and likes people. She is a healthy puppy who is very playful and cheeky enough to be adorable. She is medium energy and has a lovely curly tail which makes her so special.

Her adopting family will need to get her used to walking on and off the lead and she will also need to be house trained as she currently lives outdoors. She needs a family that is aware of all the pleasure and pain of raising a puppy and is prepared to provide the training and socialisation necessary for her to become a happy and well balanced dog.

Nika would be best suited for a family without or with children over 10 where she is not left alone for long periods of time and there’s time for her training. She will need to be treated as a member of the family and be included in family programmes. She could happily live with a friendly dog to keep her company but she could also be happy living with her humans to care for her only.

Nika is currently in Hungary and is ready to travel to the UK as soon as the right family is found for her. She comes fully vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, flea and tick treated, with an EU passport and DEFRA approved paperwork.

The right owner will need to agree to have her spayed once fully grown. Adoption is subject to Home Check and Adoption fee.
